South Asia Has a New Economic Leader. Will the World Take Note?

You're right, back when I was a kid in Chittagong, I didn't know what a hijab was, and only found about it in Canada. Burkas were seen among some (mostly rural people) though rarely, but Hijab was nowhere found. Now it is fairly common among the urban middle class and beyond. Religious orthodoxy has gone up in Bangladesh, like most of the Islamic world (dismantling of pan-Arabism in the Arab world, post General Zia Pakistan, Erdogan-led Turkey etc). Now, strong displays of religiosity is 'cool' for the middle class, and no longer confined to sections of the lower and upper classes. Hijabs are far more common among the urban middle class by far than in the less economically sound rural areas. Atheism has also gone up among sections of the society, as other sections have double down on religion. I don't think these developments are negative or positive, and as long as the state roots out fanaticism from both factions, and maintains a secular attitude towards governance we are on the right track. We must catch up to the developed world, before we can bark about our ideological stances on anything. Thankfully, Bangladesh has learned that, but it seems a lot of our neighbours have not fully embraced it.
What a clear, concise and forward looking post. No wonder Bangla the basket case of Asia is rising fast ....

People make countries. The collective outlook of the people shows in the state and direction a country is heading.
WHITE PEOPLE ARE THE PROBLEM
You need to get out of that white trash Canada. Maybe Haiti or better Jamaica might be a alternative for you.

Bangladesh was never Islamic to begin with, actually we are more religious now than we ever were....

The Bengali culture is innately agnostic and many of our celebrated festivals are outright against what Muslims from elsewhere would consider the norms of Islam.

As time passes our society is again drifting towards agnosticism but there is now a small but strong group of religious hardliners.

Take note however, that our hardliners are Barbie dolls when compared to hardliners from elsewhere, as in they don't blow up or slaughter people left and right.

Secularism prevails in Bangladesh because of the bengali culture, in India only the upper class are actually secular, as is being exposed now, under Congress, they merely stepped on everyone's throat who said otherwise, so we never heard the horror stories about religious disharmony in India back then.

I will get flack for saying this but I believe secularism is the right state choice for Bangladesh, when Sheikh Mujeeb instated it in 70s everyone got along under the military leaders changed it decades later, until Hasina enforced it again in 2009.

That gap in between, is where the hardliners birthed a whole new generation whose thought processes belong to the 14 century.

But over time, we are dealing with them, Bangladesh is on the right path, we have tackled the little bits and pieces of violent extremism.

Now onto reform and relegating Madrasas to religious teachings only.

Spot on.

See how Runa Laila used to dress on PTV back in 1960s. This is unusual for BTV today. Religious chauvinism and show off is on the rise in BD often to mask misdeeds carried out in secret.

Bangladesh has the potential to become a Netherlands or Singapore of South Asia. Chinese must seize the opportunity to deepen our ties with Bangladesh in every way and even guarantee its security, otherwise aggressors could pressure Bangladesh and limit its prosperity.

Chinese have much to offer Bangladesh ranging from construction, Ielectronics and heavy industry, to gaming, TV and movies. One day I hope Bangladeshis will be playing Genshin Impact on their Huawei mobile as they ride a CRRC train car on the Dhaka metro to their high paying IT job working for Alibaba.

China must make its moves quickly.
Bangladesh is under increasing pressure from India and the US to support their geostrategic agendas.

Help with Rohingya repatriation and modernising BAF will help strengthen ties immensely. Then there are Special Economic Zones that China can utilise to take advantage of Bangladesh's tariff privileges.

Normally, as a Pakistani, I don't comment on BD matters. Japan was economic power, without muscle, was the world economic leader, and what happens in Americ- japan trade war brought their economy flat. Are we talking about this type of BD economy, which has no value in the real world? Without muscle power, It just a figure.

Japan still is a world economic and technological leader that Bangladesh should emulate.
Bangladesh's military power or lack thereof is irrelevant in the global context. It is Bangladesh's imports and exports that matter to the world.

BD deserves all the success coming their way.
The only thing that may disrupt this trajectory would social cohesion issues and an over-zealot religious interference in executing economic and foreign policies.

South Asia, with almost 30% of humanity, has an enormous potential if the only thing we compete on is economic success.
