I have visited shanghai and hong kong I know they must be tier 1 cities, I was asking is there some classification by chinese govt. on population wise.
Shanghai and Hong Kong are surely impressive no doubt about that but I would have liked if some chinese influence would have left on high rises they all look same to me whether dubai/shanghai or moscow.
Wanted to see some chinese architecture like I have seen in movies.

Hongkong is not a part of mainland of China along with Macau and Taiwan,we usually don't mention these three with our mainland cities,we classify our cities mostly according to its GDP,landmass,the percentage of middle-class in its all demography,Shenzhen,Shanghai,Guangzhou,Beijing are currently four main tier one cities of China,maybe later Chongqing and Chengdu will soon join them

Just show pics from 2nd, 3rd or even 4th tier cities, there are 660+ of these, especially those in mid-west of China. The country is still in the process of massive urbanization, and will take time to complete.

And you are right, 1st tier cities need not to be shown, like my city Shanghai.

yea indeed,bunches of Chinese tier 2nd ,3nd ,4nd cities are either being rapidly ungraded to be ranked as tier1 from tier2 like Chengdu Chongqing,Nanjing,etc,or be transformed from counties to cities,anyway,China is still changing earthshakingly in terms of urbanization

Yes the idea of "tier" isn't official, rather this classification is frequently used by media, academic or business purposes. After traveling to most parts of China, I would say these 39 cities should classified as "Band One".

• The 4 Direct Municipalities (中央直辖市; Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing)

• Capitals of the 23 Provinces (省会; 含10个副省级市)

• Capitals of the 5 Ethnic Autonomous Regions (自治区首府/省会)

• The 2 Special Admin Regions (Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR)

• The 5 Vice-Province Cities (副省级市; Dalian, Qingdao, Ningbo, Xiamen, Shenzhen)

Other than the above, there 620+ cities in China that are beautiful, maybe we can shed some lights on them! My favorite is Yantai, Suzhou, Beihai, Qinghuangdao ...
