What's new

Some of the world's most elite special forces: Business Insider: Defense

but I wonder why they keep in Operations like APS Peshawar ? I mean the job of SSG is to eliminate threat with minimum collateral damage , and take care of hostage , an RPG does not fit into the scene don't you think ?

SSG didn't use RPGs in APS operation .. It's used against terrorists in WOT.. Against bunkers, built up areas ..

Russians,Turks etc also use it.

.
But, I've always respected the Russians.

But didn't they got their *** handed to them in the Soviet-Afghan War? By semi-trained tribal locals and later, SSG/ISI operatives dressed as Afghan? (or so I read, o_O)

And China suffered poorly against Vietnam. Sh*t changes in 30 years.

Today's Russia isn't that of the 80s. They've invested a lot in their military equipment, training and operational experience.

bro if I remember correctly when Commando's arrive their unit does have man carrying RPG's , I can try find you the footage but its gonna take time ..
but yeah you can say they don't send those men inside the school carrying RPG , they have a man with RPG just in case .. in that case you are right :)

.
Not just in Afghanistan .. ISI/SSG were leading mujahideen fighters as far as modern day Uzbekistan .. That was USSR back than..

Ok then, what about the Chechen Wars? Why couldn't the Russians defeat the Chechen's then so easily? Why did it take thousand of casualties on the Russian side? There is clearly not that much bravado than meets the eye.

Obviously, as you know, the insurgency was successful in the First Chechen War but it took 9+ years to take it out and that with a ~1:2 death ratio on the Russian side. The second Chechen War was in the last decade. So, where were the ultra powerful and modernly equipped Russian Forces?

I know that the Russians have upgraded a lot in the last decade and years but please don't give them "too" much credit. :)

Yes I read that too but decided not mentioning our involvement in the Central Asian countries since it didn't put us against the Spetsnaz and it's affiliates that much unlike the Soviet-Afghan War.

I have doubts about the accuracy of the above. It does not include SAS of UK. SAS was formed in 1941 and is the the Special service that started all others; the US Green Berets ( formed in 1952) are also excluded.

SGS are indeed good, one can say very good, but to say that SGS are better trained, equiped & led than the British SAS! Regrettably, I would disagree.
and let me also tell you about Special boat services of Britain. their training regime and strict recruitment can be gauged by the fact that volunteers who don't make it through in the final stages of selection are recommended to go for SAS. they are mostly shrouded in mystery but their missions in WW2 and afterwords are a stunning read.

lists like these are not more than patriotic feel good listing with choreographed Hollywood style pictures.
I agree with you that both USA and UK special forces are the most prolific, active and have the most knowledge and experience of operation across the globe.. no other force comes closer to them.
specially including third word country forces like India and Pakistan is unrealistic

Considering the training regimes of 90% of the special forces are classified and kept in secret, is it even possible to come up with a top 10 ?

I agree and it never is
also a Vs comparison is made as if these special forces will come against each other, whereas in reality they go behind enemy lines and seek out the least trained, least equipped or motivated people and are out of the place before a credible response can reach them.
it might sound strange but they will be facing mostly regular troops or paramilitary forces who stand no chance against them.

and finally.. no one knows how many they are, how much time they spend in their training. what do they train .. what equipment they use and whatever is in the media might be a dated information.
for me

the biggest asset and quality of a special force personnel is his indestructible resolve, his endurance & his no quiter attitude. the fancy equipment and gear is just a bonus.

reason why I class the Western special forces (particularly UK/ USA) more than anyone else in the world is.. their actual operational exposure.. they are constantly in use to do the dirty work of their governments in the assassinations, instigating insurgencies, uprisings , sabotage across the globe from Latin America to Africa, Middle East and far east.

SAS have mostly fallen into a dormant state - meanwhile Pakistan has been in a state of constant conflict; thus possessing a battle hardened military with very experienced special units. The SSG are in an element of continuous operations and non-stop fighting. Although the SAS is slightly better trained than the SSG ; experience fills the l gap. As for equipment, SSG isnt that far behind from the SAS; if not at all. SAS tends to have more baggy and heavy equipment; which I think, turns out to be more of an obstacle.

Time is changing, this isnt WW2 anymore.

Our SSG uses Russian RPG's in their units as I have notice in multiple operations in Pakistan, but do other Special force unites uses weapons like RPG's ? I never seen them
Yes, Special forces units do use similar weapons.

RPGs can become very crucial in a long range firefight that is isolated from urban zones.

yeah that make sense, and DESERT FIGHTER explain it too, but the Special forces with RPG look way too Bad A$$ :D

Actually; Russia is no where close to the power it possessed in the 80's - back then their 'military equipment and training' was considered unmatched. They are continuing to decline in power; Russia lost 11% of its GDP in 2009 alone and is continuing to have negative growth; although it has reached -4%.

A couple of RSF pictures with flashy equipment isnt going to change much.

Considering the training regimes of 90% of the special forces are classified and kept in secret, is it even possible to come up with a top 10 ?
Yes it actually is.

You can rank special forces by its performance, experience, past and current operations, equipment and reputation.

Do you have the original pic?
