Soldier Killed on Border With Pakistan; Army Launches Probe

Srinagar, Nov 25: An Indian army soldier was killed at a forward post near the border with Pakistan today. Indian army termed the incident a hostile act and launched investigations into it.

Police sources said that a soldier was manning his position near a forward post along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistani controlled Kashmir, early this morning when bullets from the other side hit him. The Indian army soldier was hit by two bullets and died on the spot. The incident took place at Langour post close to the border with Pakistan.

Indian army spokesman while confirming the killing of one of its soldiers, said the death of the soldier was caused due to hostile fire. "The Army has launched investigations into the incident. After investigations, we can say with certainty, where the bullets came from," he said.

It is in place to mention here that the ceasefire is holding between Indian and Pakistan soldiers along the frontiers since 2003. There have been some minor incidents of violations, but there has not been a big violation.

ISLAMABAD: Indian forces opened fire on a Pakistani checkpost on Monday, violating a ceasefire at the Poonch Sector on the line of control (LoC) without provocation, a spokesman for the Pakistan army said. Pakistani forces retaliated, returning heavy fire, he added.

Talking to Online, Major General Waheed Arshad, director general of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), rejected claims by the Indian forces that Pakistani forces had violated the ceasefire agreement.

He said the Indian forces had violated the ceasefire accord by opening fire on the Poonch Sector checkpost without provocation. Pakistani forces merely returned fire, he maintained.

Pakistani forces respect the ceasefire agreement with India, Arshad said, adding however, that whenever Indian forces violate the agreement, Pakistani forces do retaliate. He had no comment on Indian claims that an Indian soldier lost his life in the crossfire.

Soon after the incident, a ‘flag meeting’ of Pakistani and Indian forces’ officials was convened at the LoC to discuss how such incidents can be avoided in the future, and how to keep the ceasefire alive, the Pakistan army spokesman said. online

Things havent changed much but slowed down to an extent that it appears to be changed. Since the cease fire i think this is for the first time, a solider lost his life and that too from indian point of view while pakistan side isnt aware of it. While before the ceasefire these losses were on regular basis from both sides.
