Sohaib Maqsood, Fawad Alam in Line for Pakistan ODI Captaincy: Reports

Karachi: Pakistan batsmen Sohaib Maqsood and Fawad Alam are under consideration to be appointed as captain of the national one-day side after the World Cup.

A well-informed source in the Pakistan Cricket Board said that the hierarchy of the board had ruled out a comeback for either Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik to the one-day squad.

In present circumstances the board is looking at two candidates to replace Misbah-ul-Haq as ODI captain and they are Sohaib Maqsood and Fawad Alam, the source confirmed. (Inzaman Labels Misbah Defensive Skipper)

The source said the board had promptly issued a press statement of Chairman Shaharyar Khan on Friday appreciating the team?s performance in the World Cup only to kill any chances of Misbah or Afridi changing their mind about retiring from ODI cricket. "That is why in the statement the PCB chief appreciated their contribution to Pakistan cricket and said they would be given a befitting farewell."

In the past Afridi has twice announced his retirement and reversed his decision.

The source said the board's hierarchy was clear that its time to move on and there were also chances that the decision to appoint Afridi as T20 captain until the next World Cup might also be reversed.

The idea is to go for a fresh captain and while Shaharyar is in favour of Fawad there is also a strong lobby for Sohaib Maqsood. Although he struggled in the World Cup but the feeling is that he is calm like Misbah and educated and added responsibility will bring out the best in him," the source disclosed.

Asked if there were chances of discarded allrounder Shoaib Malik coming into consideration to lead the ODI squad he said at present neither Malik nor Kamran were in the board's equation or future planning.

"The board is even contemplating having a straight talk with Younis Khan and requesting him to retire from one-day internationals."

The source also confirmed that the board would be appointing a vice captain for all three formats.

Sohaib was to be appointed vice-captain to Misbah for the one-day series in UAE but because of the issues related to Afridi pushing for the captaincy and Younis Khan's selection the board differed the matter to after the World Cup, the source said.

Can't understand why these idiots are considering Fawad Alam. For the most part he has played domestic cricket and he is older in age.

Misbah ended up doing it himself without saying anything. They're going to make him the captain!? His ego will talk more than his captaincy.

So far Sarfraz has played 39 ODIs and in them played only 2 good games. He has a long way to go to prove his worth as a Captain.

Other than short term Salman Butt and Yousuf Youhana when was the last time we had a Captain from Lahore ?

Previous Captains, Misbah ul Haq was from Mianwali, Shahid Afridi from Khyber Agency / Karachi, Shoaib Malik from Sialkot, Younis Khan from Mardan, Inzammam ul Haq from Multan, Moin Khan from Rawalpindi, Waqar Younus from Vehari, Rashad Latif from Karachi, Saeed Anwar from Karachi...

Even candidates, Sohaib Maqsood is from Multan and Fawad Alam from Karachi

The way he refused to stand at short mid wicket & argued with Misbah, he deserves chitrol for that.
Who ever is promoting him for the captaincy is an idiot. The guy deserves a ban for his misconduct in the last Match.
Sarfraz Ahmed is a far better option, his position is pretty secure in both tests & ODI. He has shown he can open & if need be play down the order, his glove work is pretty good & he is an aggressive & confident lad. The way he was standing way outside the crease against quicks is commendable. PCB should try & get him a contract in county cricket for a couple of seasons & he is secure.

Wahab is an express fast bowler and is injured 4 months of a year. A captain needs to be a fit batsman and they usually are if you look at other teams.

Problem is Shehzad and Umar Akmal are too young.

I would make Alam captain for 2 year period as he has experience of captaining his domestic team and has done well.

After 2 years Umar, Shehzad and the rest can be considered to become captain.

Problem is Shehzad and Umar Akmal are too young.

I ll rule out Shehzad for being the biggest P***y around in cricket atm & Akmal for being a scheming little B*****d.

Sarfraz as captain & wahab as vice captain. Both are hard working & of good character. The way wahab took an issue with being sledged & replied in kind should add to his CV.
We need fighters if we are to build our cricket again & the post Misbah period should be different to the one witnessed under Misbah in approach & character.
