Amusing that some people equate 'modernity' with secularism, casinos, concerts, and night clubs.
I don't see where Saudi Arabia is developing universities, research centers, high tech manufacturing hubs, all staffed with local talent. Even for school curricula, their obsession is to tone down Islam and promote other religions.
What's the point of 'modernity' if you have to surrender your culture and pretend to be someone else? Both India and China are pursuing modernity without being ashamed of their own culture.
P.S. I always find it amusing when recently arrived desis with strong accents look at me disapprovingly as I use my hands to eat food in restaurants. Meanwhile, they try desperately to 'be white' and use spoons and forks for everything.
