A vast area of north China was hit by snowstorms on Sunday, disrupting traffic in Beijing, Tianjin and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Six highways passing through the capital have been temporarily closed and traffic authorities are stepping up inspections.

Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region issued an alert calling for the maintenance of roads, railways and telecommunication facilities.

In Tianjin, all highways have been shut down and more than 20 flights have been delayed at Tianjin Binhai International Airport.

Bus companies in Tianjin said they added more capacity to cope with the city's transportation needs

If you actually compare the temperatures of Beijing, Sapporo and Nemuro during winter, the minimum temperature is lower in Beijing compared to Sapporo and Nemuro. Beijing can get as cold as -9.4C, whereas Sapporo and Nemuro only go as low as -8.4C. However Beijing gets very little precipitation during the winter months compared to both Sapporo and Nemuro, but it doesn't mean it's warmer. I think it's the continental climate because Seoul's climate looks more similar to Beijing's, having a very low min temperature with lower precipitation than Sapporo and Nemuro.

But it might be easier to visualise using the Koppen climate classification like such

Koppen_World_Map_(retouched_version).png

Beijing, Seoul, Pyongyang, Sapporo and Nemuro are all classified under group D.
Beijing, Seoul and Pyongyang are Dwa, the w meaning their winters are dry (but that doesn't mean it's warm, it's both dry and freezing in the winter, and as shown in the above graphs, it can get colder than Nemuro and Sapporo); the a meaning the warmest temp is above 22C (i.e. their summers are warmer)

Nemuro and Sapporo are Dfb, the f meaning neither winters nor summers are dry; the b meaning the warmest temp does not exceed 22C.

So no your "tropical Southerner" thing is wrong. That would only work if you were talking about locations in the A group: Af, Am, and Aw. Those are tropical areas.

Well most of Chinese live in more tropical climate than Japanese. Can you really compare the weather of Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Hainan Taiwan etc to like Hokkaido or Honshu?

I think the weather in coastal Southen China is so similar to that of Chichijima islands or Okinawa.... So tropical and jungle hot!!!

Maybe northern Chinese from Heilongjiang can understand us Nemuro folk!!

I don't know if you missed the climate map but most of southern China has the same climate category as southern Japan, it looks like Cfa.

I'll post it again, here

Cfa is not tropical, but subtropical. You cannot grow durians and coconuts there. You can grow clementines and oranges.

Tropical are the blue areas like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand. You can grow durians and coconuts there.

Winter in Nemuro Subprefecture,

When the going gets tough...the tough get...snow mobiling?? LOL!

what the..

China is closer to Siberian high pressure from the continent than Japan, north China especially north west China is a lot colder than Japan, the reason why Japan has snow is because you are sea climate, very humid, unlike the dry weather in Asia continent

. .
Snow alone is not a factor to decide which area is colder.

In winter 2013, in O Quy Ho mountain pass between Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces in Vietnam, around 10 - 15 km from Sapa (the famous tourist town in the north of Vietnam), it was up to 60cm of snow, although the temperature might be just a little below freezing.

When I was in Korea in winter 2009, temperature frequently down to -10oC since early December, but there was no snow until late Dec.

Today Beijing weather is 19 - 32oF, while Sapporo is 33 - 38.
