Some of you folks are really out of touch with the rest of the world. Let me break it down for you all ... I didn't say that the Movie won it's awards because of poverty. You're OWN PEOPLE are saying that by using terms "Poverty Sells". What's the matter with all of you?

Readers of the developed world are caught up in a time wrap​

The last couple of months have suddenly put India into the literally centerstage. If the saga was started by the awarding of Booker Prize to Aravind Adiga, its culmination literally happened through the Oscar nomination for A R Rahman. No doubt, foreign labels and tags on indigenous products have always been perceived to enhance the acceptability of the same at home. All the more reason why artists are increasingly re-orienting their creation to suit such recognitions. It is also interesting to note that creators of best-selling titles and winners of world’s most prestigious awards are those Indians who reside some thousands of kilometres away from India and away from the ghetto on which they love to write and make fortune. Without even an iota of apprehension I can rightfully claim that as a nation, we have no dearth of such talents. Residing outside allows them to easily connect with a huge readership base who are typically caught up in a time wrap. Western readers usually love to have fascinating reading on problems of third world countries. So there is hardly any market for content pertaining to rising India and its economic, social and cultural transformation. And with most of the recognition going towards themes on disturbing realities, there's hardly been any effort towards changing the same. Rarely any Indian writer sitting abroad has produced a positive and bright image of India. No doubt there have been some great pieces of literary work and stupendous achievements but almost all in the same league. Take for instance, Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy, which talks about post-Independence national election of 1952, inter-sectarian hostility, caste-divide and lot more on India’s distorted social structure. Similarly, A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry talks about India's post independence societal changes and about India’s caste-divide and employment problems while his book Family Matters talks about the predicaments Indian Parsis face here thanks to corruption and communalism which is an inherent part of Indian system. In the novel, The Namesake, Jhumpa Lahiri describes nothing but the dilemma faced by Bengali immigrants in the US and the book eventually received huge brickbats from the expatriate Bengali community for portraying them wrongly. Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss depicts the insurgency in the Himalayas by the Gorkhali people and its impact on the country. Even this one came for major criticism from critics and especially from inhabitants of Kalimpong for rendering negative stereotyped image of Indian Nepalese. Moreover, Booker winning novel, The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga is all about corruption, poverty and exploitation in India.

The problem seems twofold. Firstly, India does not have decent platforms for portraying one's literary work, and neither do we have awards in the likes of Booker or Pulitzer. The domestic market for literary work is still nascent. Secondly, as stated earlier, people sitting abroad find it easy to maintain the status quo by writing on issues that have higher chances of acceptability rather than writing upon the latent shift India is experiencing whose acceptability in the West might not be guaranteed. In the given scenario, if the literary work has to present the real picture of the world we live-in, then the Indian writers sitting abroad should assert more of transforming India than depicting an India which was a reality a few decades back. If the readers of the developed world are caught is a time wrap, it is our responsibility to break it. But then would the NRI writers love to do that??

Slumdog doesn't sell poverty, it sells hope and an underdog story. It sells a fairytale happy ending.

you find every where, Accept the fact when u go to Bombay it stink like someone just shytt in front of you, unhygienic qualities are every where water is like oil in some of old Delhi areas.
you sometimes even get shiiitt in your water ( it happened in a very rich area in Delhi).

Cops are corrupt, government is useless, government job officials in office like mcd mhada dda are worst than 25 yr old used panties of a prost who been working extrra hour in sonakachi.

We need to accept the fact, Be positive

but at the same time there are people who are earning big here country is producing brilliant brain education is of highest class , much better than west. Sportsmen are getting some recognition its a start nevertheless. People want a great future.

So if a movie show two faces of this world there is nothing wrong. its wrong when its India shinning its ours when its India stinking its not ours.

Grow up and tighten your belts and lets do something lets just do our share. I am doing mine and will keep doing even though i know there are useless people all around me.

IIPM is run by a Guy who wrote, Directed and Produced a Movie a Few Years ago called "Rok Sako To Rok Lo". He said he embarked on this project after doing a evaluation of the audiences perceptions using his Institute etc. And Guess what! See that movie and think, these guys at IIPM have no right to talk of movies- They copied Jo Jeeta wohi sikandar and made it Rok Sako to Rok Lo and it was Horrific! Do see it, it will shed some light on the team that runs IIPM!

sir ahmad you know today on news i was listening to what shekhar kapoor , karan (coffe guy) many other big stars of bolly wood and some intellect had to say: They said its not our film-
WHAT IF US MAKES A MOVIE ON war on terror.
Do iraqi or talibani celebrate it ???? like we do?
See it shows the great courage which still exist in this new gen x y z . but its not our movie and its surely not Just about how pathetic we are or how great we are. Its a fiction but shows both side of coin.

IIPM is a fraud business school. Their MBA isn't even real, and not recognized by the UGC or any other body in India.

Check it out. I know this because I'm "in the loop" as it happens, regarding B-schools in India.

Look, I respect Karan, Shekhar etc, But let me tell you this Movie is as Indian as any Bollywood movie because it follows the exact pattern of a masala entertainment and what we should accept is that a British Director Executed it with a FULL set of INDIAN Technicians. This shows the West trusts Indian Techs and movie makers.

One more thing, Do you think, Karan or the Ghais of Bollywood would have had the guts to make a movie starring some slum kids and a new hero and heroine and spend more than 50 crores on it? Hell no, unless Dev Patels dad is a Harry Baweja or Roshan! Karan wouldnt dare it, and Shekhar, well he might, but he didnt. So we gotta appreciate the effort.

Please appreciate a Movie for what it is. This movie shows that there is oppurtunity in India for those willing to go after it. As for the others clamouring on the Poverty in India, I would say, Yes We have a large number of our people living below the Poverty Line, and We will Over come it.

Till then, Dont Blow a Vein because Indians won the Coveted OSCAR and a Pakistani Didnt! I would be happy to See a Pakistani win an Award, But I see some here Hate an Indian win any award! Sad--- See a Movie without thinking where it is from, and think of where it Leads you!

IIPMs movie wing,- Planman Movies had a tough time after Rok Sako To Rok Lo, and they breathed a sigh of Relief when the movie they produced Mithya became a decent grosser. But Still IIPM and its Subsidiaries are Viewed Poorly by the general public. Trust me.

So much for your concern on Indian slums and poverty in India. We would like to reciprocate this concern by making another movie pretty soon called 'Slumpig Millionaire' to bring attention to some others living in poverty.

I think the typical pig "Slur" in your post that you and your fellow nationalists use all over the internet, clearly shows your blind hate towards Pakistan. It should be enough to ban your petty little existence if someone decides to take the necessary measures to put you back in your place. Throughout this whole thread, I haven't drifted away from the "Ground Reality" and that's exactly why some of you are having such an "Obvious" problem. As I've said it before, Suck it up if you can't comprehend the Intent of the thread.
