Not taking anything from them, but Sri Lanka could afford to do it because it is a small country with no immediate enemies.

And size does not have much to do with anything. It's all about education, governance and lack of corruption. (Yes they have corruption, but not as bad as Pakistan)

Size does matter a lot. Pakistan has to educate 10 people for every 1 of Sri Lanka. Agreed on bad governance and corruption.
