The International Olympic Committee announced Wednesday that six additional sports will be added to the docket at the 2020 Summer Olympics from Tokyo.

The IOC voted to include baseball, softball, surfing, skateboarding, karate, and sport climbing in Tokyo. The news comes on the heels of the 2014 vote from the IOC that ended a 28-sport cap at the Summer Games. The six new sports will also add 18 more medals and nearly 500 new athletes to the 2020 Olympics, according to Sports Illustrated.

While baseball and softball were both featured in the Olympics as recently as 2008, the other four events will be new.

Climbing will reportedly feature two categories for both men and women: bouldering, and a combined lead and speed. From Sports Illustrated:

In lead climbing, the competitors start at the bottom of a course and must climb within a set time frame and on only one attempt. Speed climbing involves a sometimes easier course that athletes focus on completing as fast as possible. Bouldering involves no ropes and can be attempted several times as courses are shorter and more difficult within a set amount of time.

Karate will reportedly feature two categories, debuting in front of its home crowd. From SI:

The Olympic competition will feature 60 athletes in six kumite and two kata demonstration categories. Kata is more of a demonstration sport that shows off karate’s technique. Kumite is fighting that involves punching and kicking.

Details for both surfing and skateboarding are not yet clear.

So, they are finally putting Softball and Baseball back in the schedule

This would not be a good news to China, as they are good at none of the 6 sports. that was being added, and that's another 18 medal different

Well, what do we know is this, baseball, softball will generate 2 medal each, Karate will get 2 more medal and Climbing another 2, which make Skating and Surfing sharing 12 medals. And both Surfing and Skateboarding are basically dominated by American and Australian.. I am expecting to see US and Aussie at least getting half of these, while US traditionally dominate softball too,

Any idea if the baseball is just for guys and the softball is just for girls (probably have to even things out)? I think it won out because the Japanese are pretty good at it. Softball seems to have a good following:

Surfing seems like an odd choice as not all future host countries will be the best venues. Unless they have some wave pool in mind.

IOC has kicked out Wrestling from 2020 Olympic because Europe and USA suck in it. You are expecting them to admit an exclusively Asian sport.

Nothing to do with slave mentality ,The game itself a relic of colonialism, So that argument it self is contradictory.. It's about reality and not being delusional

Cricket is a global minority sport played in a handful of former British colonies, It does not have a global appeal nor does it aim to popularize the sport, Just because in India it is regarded as religion does not make it worthy of inclusion to any global arena

Apart from South Asia.. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (Again subject to argument cos Rugby in the island is as or more popular than cricket domestic wise) No other Test nation even have Cricket as it's top sport

The governing body is corrupt to the core and is only interested in further alienation and exclusivity, So no Cricket does not deserve a place in the Olympics

I'm not a advocate for baseball, Don't confuse yourself, And there are many other Sports thats quite absurd to be included in an arena like the Olympics like Golf, Football, Tennis, Skate Boarding, Equestrian sports etc.. It's basically adhered to accommodate the superiority of developed nations, with the resources.. But that does'nt mean by any way Cricket warrants a place either
