Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) has recently announced its first supercomputer with "π" system. The peak performance of the system can reach 263 teraflops and it ranks as the 158th one on the list of the latest global Top 500, which will be used in the high-end cutting-edge research.
SJTU's "π" supercomputing system is designed and constructed by Langchao Electronic Information Industry Co.,Ltd, who is one of the developers and constructers of Tianhe-1A and Tianhe-2. It is known that "π" system will become the key supporting platform of supercomputing of "Collaborative Innovation Center of IFSA Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) Science and Application".
In terms of the name of the system "π", "π"itself in Greek means parallel and parallel is the basic concept of high performance computing. In addition, "π" is an irrational constant which had always been known in B.C. and the evolution of "π"value is closely related to the advancement of human computing technology. Moreover, "π" can be seen as the abbreviation of the first letters "J" and "T" of Jiaotong University, says Gu Yizhong, director of high performance computing center at SJTU.
According to the relevant experts from Langchao Group, "π" system adopts a "CPU+GPU+MIC" trebling hybrid computing architecture, which has 2,570,000 computing cores and its computing performance has excelled "Rubik's cube" from Shanghai Supercomputing Center which was once the most advanced in Shanghai.
Wang Endong, president of Langchao Information, said that, high performance is at present on the way of technological evolution. The traditional single cluster architecture is now in a transition to hybrid architecture, which will be the development direction of future supercomputing and be the most feasible technology roadmap to realize the peak of supercomputers shifting from petaflops to exaflops.
He also revealed that Langchao has invested a lot of resources to develop relevant software and application in order to help users across the threshold of application. At present, SJTU network center is transferring the existing application to the trebling hybrid architecture, and the completed application has got a very good testing effect
