Singapore PM to push for bigger Indian role in Asean

NEW DELHI: As the season of Asean-India diplomacy gets underway, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong arrives here on Tuesday on a state visit for the second time in less than a decade. PM Manmohan Singh had visited Singapore in October 2011.

Accompanied by education minister Heng See Keat and parliament speaker Michael Palmer, Lee and Singh will review a relationship that has almost no wrinkles in it. Singapore, as India's closest partner in southeast Asia, will be stepping up its engagement by getting into one of the country's core sectors -- education.

On the geopolitical canvas, Singapore will push India again to play a bigger role in Asean and the East Asia Summit. While there is a greater call for Indian engagement in EAS, New Delhi has traditionally been fairly tentative.

As all of Asia looks to hedge a rising China, there are more calls for India to step up its presence in the region. This will be conveyed to India, sources said.
Foreign minister S M Krishna will be in Phnom Penh on Wednesday to attend the Asean-India ministerial meeting.

India will take Singapore's suggestion seriously and it plans to host a series of events to mark the 20th anniversary of India-Asean ties later this year.

India and Singapore will be signing an MoU between the Indian ministry of labour and their ministry of education to set up skills-based vocational training institutes. According to a study by Ficci, "India is expected to be home to a skilled workforce of 500 million by 2022. About 12 million persons are expected to join the workforce every year". Currently, India can throw up only about 3 million skilled personnel. The demand therefore is huge, if India has to transform itself.

Sources said Singapore would make available world class skill-centred curriculum to be taught in technical education institutes. In the first phase, Singapore will even fund part of it. Later, this programme will be taken to other states.

In fact, having developed a high degree of comfort with the central government, Singapore is now venturing to extend its diplomacy to Indian states.
It will offer its expertise in urban planning, water treatment and waste management to states.

India-Singapore comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) has been the first and in many ways the most effective such agreement. A second review of the CEPA is overdue, largely because the Indian commerce secretary was changed and the exercise is not yet completed. However, Singapore remains a hub for many international businesses who invest in the Indian market or who are interested in the Indian market.

India can't counter China alone...all we can do is create a stong opposition with nations like Vietnam, Singapore, South Korea, Japan etc. That will be the best strategy. Even China is emerging super-power, if their neighbours unite together, it would certainly increase the headache....like when Vietnam is bullied by China, they alone can't do that but if these countries are united, the matter will definitely attract more attention.

Also India is major player in Asia, has some control over Malacca Strait, its size and military power makes it important player. India should take initiative and lead this group to make its own SCO, NATO type organization.

China can only be contained by US, which is also trying to do so.

NATO and the group mentioned above is formed, then even SCO won't have any chance.

Multi-polar world is on the rise.

Excellent! Singapore is a close friend and an important strategic partner in Southeast Asia. Joint exploration of new technology, production and engineering should be the key.

Singaporean education would do wonders to our rigid and politicized education.

.
How are Singapore - China relations like ?

Anyone who can summarize ?

Quite good, better than india. Their relationship is like around third after US and malaysia

Thanks for replying but I was expecting "a little more than a one liner", something which includes facts and figures vis-a-vis India.

What makes you think singapore does not politicize their education?? For example, in social studies( a compulsary subject in primary school and an optional subject in seconday school) the textbooks highlights only the textbooks highlights only the achievements of the PAP. Failure is rarely mentioned.

Well you wanted me to summarise :P . Anyway it is common sense they will have a good relationship with china since around 70% of the population is chinese.

Singapore is a market driven economy and import most of their goods. Due to the fast rise of the chinese economy, singapore participated more in their growth, compared to india.

Anyway trade volume of sing-china is around $78bil sing-india is around $35bil (my data may not be very accurate but you get the point)

Any facts and figures? Like Singapore import/export wrt India/China.

I wonder how Singapore manages to maintain such close relations with both India and china.

Singapore has both Chinese and Indian population living in harmony. Plus they have some of the world's best diplomats.

Plus they dont try to fight or engage themselves in sensitive issue concerning india and china. They invested heavily in india and china, helps them adopt new technology.

Basically think of Singapore as the nice guy in school who helps the two burly guys(india and china) with their homework. Bashing singapore isnt good for either countries

They have normal relations. But in Chinese government circles they have negative view of due to its closeness with US & India and Singapore always stations its military assets in Republic china bypassing the PRC Beijing concerns. it doesn't pays heed to PRC objections over ROC military pact with itself. & china burns like hell due to this.

Perhaps you don't know Malay's hysteria in SINGAPORE. There was only 1 situation when India had difference with Singapore was in 1980 due to cold war but they understood us well not like our esteemed beloved neighbor poster..
