Singapore keen to relocate factories in Bangladesh: HC

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

CHITTAGONG,June 3 (BSS) - Singaporean High Commissioner to Bangladesh Chan Heng Wing today said Chittagong could be a suitable destination for Singaporean investors.

Singaporean investors are now reluctant to continue industrial augmentation in China due to soaring of labour cost, Wing said.

So, he said, the investors are now looking for relocating their factories in Bangladesh.

Wing was exchanging views with leaders of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) on its Chamber premises here.

He also laid emphasis on infrastructural development, supply chain management and creating skilled human resources for attracting huge foreign investment.

Lawmaker MA Latif, CCCI president Murshed Murad Ibrahim, Senior Vice-President Mahbubul Alam, directors -- Mahfuzul Hoque Shah and Mohammad Shahin Alam - and consuls of Singapore Darryl Lau and Derek Chua were present on the occasion, among others.

Speaking on the occasion, Murshed Murad Ibrahim favoured development of Bangladesh's industry sector through Singaporean expertise.

He also stressed the need for making Singapore Visa procedure easier for businessmen.

is the whole world relocating to Bangladesh? I just met my school friend in Shahbag after many days and he is already working for a european software company before finishing his computer science studies. I asked about his job and he said previously those jobs were available to china and now as cost in china is higher, they have relocated to Bangladesh for cheap engineers...... !

Great news!

If the BD government was wise it would start a multi-billion dollar investment programme for Chittagong.

Infrastructure such as power, roads and bridges should be emphasized.

Once the infrastructure is in place, expect billions of dollars in overseas investments to flow in every year.

Yeah specifically on software field it's a revolution in fact, lower wages and merit together here in BD attract them a lot. They are actually moving from india to BD, india has a solid base on this industry and recently wages climbed there both in india and China. If a plan can be orchestrated now on this field, we'd be on driving seat in future.

With the macro-level management of our economy by people like Maaal (Chandi sala) , I am afraid even cost of labor in our country will also increase. Besides this years budget planning says a lot, those jerks seriously need to re-consider a few things.

No foreign company will relocate its manufacturing or IT businesses to BD if there is a shortage of power, telephone/fax lines do not work, and, gas and water are in short supply. AL govt has been given enough time already, but, it has so far failed to improve the situation. For the time being, at least, BD should seek WB/IMF loans to finance import of LNG and diesel to fuel the production of power. The loans can be repaid with the money earned from additional production and export.
