Singapore Armed Forces

My neighbor an old man who died recently had a chance to meet a Gurkha. As a kid, he unsheathe his Kukri. He had to cut himself before he had to put it back. He says the Kukri must taste blood if unsheathe. Trust me, those guys are not shy of going hand to hand combat.

There were 45,000 Indian troops from Malaya captured and assembled in Singapore when the Japanese captured it. Of these, about 5,000 refused to join the First INA. The INA at this time had 40,000 recruits.

Indian National Army - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Of the Indians who were captured, a whopping close to 90% went on to serve the Japanese. Only 5000 refused.

That is to say, many Indians never intended to fight Japan at the first place.

"Indians' lines simply collapse upon contacting Japanese. They only brave "Indian units" are Gurkhas.

The Gurkhas are "not Indian" per se. There are Sino-Tibetan, meaning cousin of Chinese. Gurkhas are Limbus, Rai, Nagar, and not a single Indo-Aryan.

Worse proabably up to 60% of British Indian soldiers in Malaya defect and fought the Allied under Hindutva Subhas Chandra Bose, a clown today widely loved even today. They formed the so call INA army.

Indian National Army - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There is no reason UK forces fighting in Malaya, having the best weapon can be defeated by Japanese who need to be supplied from Tokyo.

These INA veterans and their scions are still powerful especially in Malaysia and according to customs of Hindutva, the form the "Congress" party in Malaysia (MIC). The MIC practice so much caste system that even racist Malay need to keep telling them to be more meritocratic

Bose and Hitler. Bose today is seen as national hero of India.

You are wrong. You do not know what ethnicity Gurkhas is. I was the school teacher of Gurkhas kid.

They are from Limbu, Magar, Gurung which are all Sino-Tibetans.

You never seen a "Chhetri" who is Indo-Aryans.

Sure. They are fierce fighters, these Gurkhas.

I dont know about that? LoL. How much you know about India and Nepal? Next time, when you come to India, meet the Gurkhas Regiment, and ask them " Are you Tibetan"? They will slap you on your face.:P

According to wiki, out of 140,000 UK soldiers, 5,500 killed 5,000 wounded 40,000 captured in Malayan campaign. Many British soldiers surrendered. Japan just throw in 70,000 men.

Malayan Campaign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also British give absurd excuse for their failure such as they are not equip with much tanks. But Malayan is largely rain Forrest with small roads cutting across them. And if British are braver, they could easy ambush the tanks or just cutting a few trees and laid it in the middle of the roads will stop the Japanese.

That is why armour warfare did not work in Vietnam war.

Basically most of the lines simply collapse without much fighting.

The Battle of Jitra lasted just three days and lines collapse immediately on engagement, which is a disgrace.

The Traitor Indian INA

At the outbreak of World War II in South East Asia, 70,000 Indian troops were stationed in Malaya. After the start of the war, Japan's spectacular Malayan Campaign had brought under her control considerable numbers of Indian prisoners of war, nearly 55,000 after the Fall of Singapore alone. The conditions of service within the British Indian Army as well as the conditions in Malaya had fed dissension among these troops. From these troops, the First Indian National Army was formed under Mohan Singh and received considerable Japanese aid and support

Above is what Wiki say about Indians who change side. Basically 40-60% of British soldiers in Malayan campaign are Indians. And around 80% survive the Malayan campaign. That is to say, they fight like cowards.

Let me ask you a question, @Lux de Veritas : The breakdown in military command communication was due various factors. The point of the matter was that the British High Command in Malaya / Singapore conceded to defeat. What gain would the Indian soldiers have in continuing on the fight against the Japanese when even the British accepted defeat? One has to also study the concept of Indian National Independence, which was awoken during this time period. Bose was a militant, sure, but he represented the will of many of his fellow countrymen regarding British suzerainty.

I would love to expand on this, but I believe that is a topic for another thread.

I'll end this post with me entreating to you to consider that concept that I had aforementioned.

If you ever have time, I want you to read about The Battle of Muar. There are plenty of Japanese military reports on this incident. A lot of Japanese accounts illustrate the hand to hand combat of The Imperial Honor Guards Division clashing with Australian 8th Division, supported by the British 9th Indian Infantry Division (1st Gurkha Rifles were here, as were the Sikh Regiment(s)).

Japanese accounts illustrate the bravery of the Indian soldier. Sikh soldiers literally fought to the last man in this engagement, many of whom, when run out of ammunition, charged the lines of the Imperial Army's Emperor's Imperial Guard -- head on, carrying and armed only with their knives. The hand to hand combat was brutal, and over 700 of the Emperor's Imperial Guard were killed in this engagement. The 9th Indian Infantry Division was practically wiped out, however, many of whom died fighting.

There was a written account of an officer in the Imperial Guard's Division who stated that Indians, specifically the Sikhs and Gurkhas demonstrated gallantry in battle, and a form of Cod of Bushido. Unlike the British 53rd Infantry Brigade who surrendered en masse, the soldiers of the 9th Indian Infantry Division ....fought to the death.

Actually Lux is right, though originly the word Gurkha means Indo-Aryan Khasi people, but people served in Gurkhas Regiment are mostly Limbu,Gurung, rai, magar and so on,those people speak sino-Tibetan languages

I came India and visited many places. BTW British actually preferred to delivered Singapore to Indians. If Indians soldiers can win the war for British, Chinese would have no place.

During WW2 Chinese beg the British to arm them, but British did not. Instead she bought Indians from India.

I taught Gurkhas students and I can say I am more familiar with Gurkhas that most in PDF. Gurkhas are not Tibetan but they migrated from Tibet. The Tibet Nepali are those from Mustang...etc where Nepal called them Bhotia, Sherpa to prevent them from identifying with China.

Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was a Tibetan and Nepal lied that he is Nepalese on encouragement of the west.

One question.. May be stupid. But why after independence Malaysia or Indonesia never try to annex singapore.

Even when india realized it invaded Goa.

That's a great question. Back in the post war days, Chinese communism was a very serious problem in the region. Singapore was already a country with a Chinese majority at that time and had very strong Chinese communist connections. UMNO was concerned that if Singapore were part of Malaya, the Chinese could become a majority in the vote pool and there would be a chance that UMNO may not be voted into power. That was their primary concern back then.

ps. UMNO = United Malays National Organisation/ Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Bersatu

I know about the legacy of Sikh people. Even in part the most trained and Indian officers during British Army was Sikh, they were elite. Even after the independence, the most of the recruitment is done from the Punjab, in Indian Army, Sikh held most of the upper post, like Generals and Brigadier.

I have many encounters with Indians, Nepali, Bangladeshi, Pakistani during school and work in the multi-racial Singapore that I am able to say, I understand them more than many of the PDF members.

I taught Gurkhas son as a school teacher.

NOT a single Indo Aryan but they are Sino-Tibetan. Below is British Gurkhas and they look entire Chinese.

gurkhasoldiers_1739021c.jpg

Note: Indians below refers to India Indian ONLY

On my job as a software engineers I met and work with a lot of Indians. I can actually make Indians talk when I pretend to scold PRC for 1963 Sino-Indian wars. I would say something like PRC attack India and PRC is shit then I amuse myself when Indians start getting emotional. Then I pretend to support them and scold PRC.

From there I am aware that Singapore import of Indian nationals is a mistake and they are going to harm Chinese Singaporeans.

@Lux de Veritas ,

You need to study the colonial psychology and the British prejudice against natives from "Cathay" , ergo, the Chinese. The British did not trust Chinese in any political mechanisms, their policies during the colonial epoch is testament to this. If they cannot trust them politically, what makes you think that they (British) would trust them with military arms?

They preferred Indians because Indians were martialed into the British Army in the Orient. In fact, Indian soldiers formed a considerable bulk of the British Army, many of whom fought not only in the Malaya and Burma Theater(s), but also in North Africa, even in Europe.
