I am not really sure what the big deal is that a Singaporean got elected to take the post of any Army Chief, rather then have a normal discussion this has turned out to be a some race comparison issue.

Firstly your joke is not funny especially not for the wider audience, would you like it if all Chinese said your country is a colony of another? Not all jokes are meant to be shared mate so I hope you can see that.

Secondly Singapore will always remain in control of the Chinese, this is because the commerce which supports Singapore comes from the Chinese businesses in the region and there is a very strong link to this considering the Chinese control 75 - 90% of the commerce in these countries. If come the day we (Chinese) lose control of the country that I have no doubt the country will be retaken back by Malaysia and thats the end of that.

I am not saying this as a race or equality comparison nonsense, this is just how things work in the ASEAN region.

I went to an Ivy League school with poor Chinese grad student, princeling's kids (Deng's grandchild), rich Hong Kong & Indonesian Chinese, Taiwanese and Chinese-Americans. Despite political and wealth differences, we all co-mingled. The only people that didn't were the Singapore scholarship students on a full ride from the Singapore government. I always thought you guys didn't see yourselves as "Chinese".

We do see ourselves as ethnic Chinese, we celebrate Chinese New Year, Mooncake festival etc with families just as any other Chinese do in the region, from my days I notice that overseas Chinese student cliques are typically made up in the below groups.
1. Singaporean and Malaysian (and sometimes with Taiwanese or HK)
2. HK Students (They typically speak Cantonese among themselves)
3. Indonesian Chinese (most I known only speak English or Indonesian)

I can't say for China students cause we didn't have many studying during those days, but though we are ethnic Chinese our mindsets are different and usually its just harder to click with those from a different region. Also please don't judge the Singaporeans by those on scholarship, from experience most of them are snobby little brats who think the world of themselves (makes you wanna kick them in face) but there are exceptions of course

A Singaporean President is just a figure head with-out real power, he is just like the appointed governor general of Australia and NZ and many Commonwealth countries, the Prime Minister is the man in charge.
