Most Australians would be reasonably confident in identifying a venomous snake based on its colour.

But what if one of the world's deadliest snakes was a completely different colour.

That was the experience for some locals in the NSW Hunter Valley, who came across an Eastern Brown snake that was completely silver.

The Cessnock District Rescue Squad relocated the metallic grey serpent from East Cessnock yesterday.

And while silver Eastern Brown snakes are unusual, they are not unheard of, according to Australian Reptile Park's venom supervisor Zac Bower.

"They can range in colour, banding and spotting, even in the same clutch," he said.

"It's still just as dangerous as a 'brown' brown snake."

And that's very dangerous.

The Eastern Brown is the second-most venomous land snake in the world, after the inland taipan.

The Eastern Brown is responsible for 60 per cent of snake bite deaths in Australia, and cover the entire east coast, across to Adelaide and into the Northern Territory.
