'Silly' taxes make manufacturing Jaguar, Land Rover impossible in India

MUMBAI: Ruling out any possibility of manufacturing Jaguar and Land Rover in India in the near future, Tata group chief Ratan Tata has said that some "silly taxes" make even their assembly here costlier than the imports.

Tatas are building a plant in China which will export these cars to different parts of the world and have been invited by Saudi Arabia as well.

"India is still making it somewhat difficult for us to offer it," he told PTI when asked as to when Jaguar and Land Rover could be manufactured in India.

"They are being assembled now (in India). Unfortunately, today if we were to manufacture here, it would cost more than the assembled one," said Tata, who would hang his boots as the chief of an over USD 100-billion salt-to-software conglomerate later this month on December 28.

Asked about the difficulties in manufacturing these cars in India, Tata said, "Because we do not have scale of manufacturing here, we are selling about a 1,000 Jaguars a year and you would need to be at least four to five times that in order to justify the investment that you would make ...

"... so unfortunately, the assembly here is turning out to be more costly than importing the cars because of some silly taxes that they have been imposed on companies."

Tata said that the "government should really look at doing things to incentivise people to bring more investment to India so that it becomes a base of exports, which unfortunately is not happening and China is doing that."

"We are building a plant in China which will export to different parts of the world. Even Saudi Arabia is asking us to come there and India is still making it somewhat difficult for us to offer it," he added.

Good. Indian Govt must listen to this man. Ratan can be inducted into govt after he retires. We need people with capabilities at centre who are not afraid of being thrown away.

Why didn't he elaborate what he wants done??? I am sure our GOI will look into it as a farewell gift for a great human being.

India is becoming a regional power and these kinds of things will definately hurt investors some what. But India as a biggest democaracy of the world, I'm really sure that they will come out of it.

All the corporate honchos here has been crying for rationalizing the taxation system.. this current govt. haven't implemented the GST nor answered the double taxation in many sectors etc etc .. rather under Pranab Mukherjee ( finance misniter ) at the helm, retrospective taxation was the norm..

the current govt has been a total disaster for us !!

Dont be silly. Do you even know what taxes he is talking about? what the purpose of the taxes are? Whether these taxes serve other interests for the nation?

Dont be a political tool blinded by hatred, know the actual issue before commenting. To me, both Congress and BJP are corrupt useless parties that are good for nothing.

why the hell these kinds of taxes we have ? our best and oldest company is RUNING to other country why why why? don't u think al-khongress needs to change rules. Make business more easy so can indian economy can get the investment. Bjp ruled state are much better for doing business. India not had this image in front of world in Bjp gov. And if u not agree pls enlighten me.

Guys this is not indicative of the entire FDI market. In fact in other areas India has some of the most competitive tax systems in the world. Of course Ratan TATA is going to be gung-ho on this issue as it relates to his business but it doesn't mean it is as bad as he'd like us to believe.

But such rules and regulations are forever evolving as the economy changes and ebbs and flows.

Patrons of GMR in India have allowed one clause to the the effect that no other airport within a 150km radius of Delhi airport can come up and thus elimnated furure competition. Policy framers should have been aware that a very busy airport like Delhi must have an auxilary airport at least to act in emergency. Vast tract of land around Delhi airport has been given away to the blue-eyed GMR. Many international airlines have termed Delhi airport as world's costliest onr. Considering track record of GMR in India, it can easily be said that their formula of pocketing power-that-be didn't work in Maldive.


The reason i brought it up is becoz vested powers in India can and will go out their way to help GMR but wont do **** for TATA who has done more for India than any other corporation since the British Raj. Wake up ppl.....our govt is a f-ing joke
