Sri Lanka’s former president Mahinda Rajapaksa claimed on Thursday that India was now “silent” on growing Chinese influence in the island nation but the neighbour country was more vocal on the issue during his administration.

“All my Indian friends were shouting against me when Chinese submarines came to Colombo port. But now they are silent like rats,” he said, addressing foreign correspondents.

Asked on what basis he can claim that Indians were no longer worried about Chinese influence in Lanka, Rajapkasa said, “They were openly expressing it then.”

He said he stands opposed to the Chinese being given 15,000 acres in his hometown of Hambantota for an industrial park.

“We welcome the industrial park but 15,000 acres would be too much,” he said.

He thought India might also be waiting to see if the Trincomalee harbour or the Palaly airport in the north may be given to them by the Maithripala Sirisena government.

Rajapaksa said India, which had backed him in the war against the LTTE, was influenced by the US to work against him.

“I wanted them to come (actively support the military campaign) they did not because of the South Indian attitude,” Rajapaksa said.

Rajapaksa alleged his ouster was due to a sustained campaign by the West, India’s RAW and others that had stared two years before the 2015 January presidential election, which he called two years ahead of schedule.

He blames everyone else but himself, The idiot called for election's with two years to go for the end of his tenure, Simply on the advise of his personal soothsayer.. That was the caliber of a leader he was, Governing a nation based on superstitions.. Now blaming all and sundry

oh he blames chinese whom he borrowed billions from to put into his own pockets, now he blames west. he blame both East and West, so who are his friends then?

Bugger is going cuckoo , Without power.. Now Blaming the Chinese

The point is,why China was bribing Rajapaksa??

They weren't bribing anyone.. Chinese have one prerogative, Investments both economic and diplomatic with no strings attached.. It's not their fault that third world tin pot dictatorships siphon off the funds they provide, Thats exactly what the Rajapaksa regime did for their corrupt mega white elephant projects

But funny thing is,China always finds these "Third world tin pot dictatorships/democracies" to make their "business".I wonder why?Is it their ignorance??Or is it they can perform some shady acts in these countries which somewhere else is going to land them in trouble?

Don't be naive. That is EXACTLY how you bribe people. You don't deliver bags of cash at night.

The investor is cost conscious and knows how to control costs and what is economically viable. When he gets a sweet deal he is bribing someone by approving inflated estimates so that the decision maker can siphon off his share.

Yes the Chinese do bribe decision makers all over the third world. I know you are probably in love with the Chinese and all but you should really keep your country first.

I do not have to be in love with the Chinese to know whats really happening on the ground, But i'm not one of those people that pee in the pants at the mere mention of China either

Chinese invest with regards to their interests, If it's economic interest or wider diplomatic and political interests there's no qualms about it.. So do Western powers but they come with political strings attached, Chinese do not as long as they benefit from it, It's the prerogative of the host nation to use it for their benefit

Sri Lanka will continue attract Chinese investments irrespective of the govt's as it has always been, Other global powers vie for influence the same way but the Chinese have the resources to lead, Lesser nations like Indian need STFU till they are in a position to counter China both economically and politically.. Crying hoarse against them in online forums wont change a thing

It does not matter to them, US debt to China is $1.115 trillion, unless ofcause you call the US tin pot dictatorship.. :coffee:

These are real facts that jolts you to reality, It gets clouded from time to time with hyper nationalism and delusions of grandeur.. And to realize there you really stand in the world.. :-)

Yahapalanaya shining!

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) last week revised down its full year growth targets set for the Sri Lankan economy to 4.5 percent and 4.8 percent for 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Within two years yahapalanaya has destroyed the Sri Lankan economy, destroyed the rupee and destroyed the stock market. Well done Ranil Wickremesinghe.
