Sikh 'genocide' petition tabled in Australian parliament | Nov 2, 2012, 11.16AM IST

CANBERRA: An Australian lawmaker has tabled in parliament a petition seeking that the horrific violence that took place in November 1984 in India following the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi be recognised as genocide against the Sikh community.

At least 3,000 Sikhs were killed in three days in the Indian capital New Delhi following the killing of Indira Gandhi on Oct 31, 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards.

Warren Enstch, the chief opposition whip for the Liberal Party, on Thursday tabled the 1984 Sikh "genocide" petition before the House of Representatives. A number of Sikhs were present in the parliament galleries when Enstch read the petition, said a press release from the Supreme Council of Australia.

"It is important to note that today, Nov 1, is 28 years to the day that these attacks took place," he said.

"And as long as they continue to be referred to as 'anti-Sikh riots' there can be no closure for the Sikh community. Discussions around mass violence and genocide will always be controversial but the continued denial of such historical injustices can only encourage modern day crimes against humanity."

The petition urged the Australian parliament to recognize that an organised campaign of horrific violence took place against the Sikh community in November 1984, and that these killings were "genocide" as per the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

The petition argues that the "the intentional and deliberate nature of the attacks on Sikh lives, properties and places of worship during November 1984 makes them crime of 'genocide'..."

Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), an international human rights group that is lobbying to get the violence of November 1984 against Sikhs recognized as "genocide", supported the tabling of the petition in the parliament of Australia.

According to Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a human rights lawyer, SFJ will now provide documents, witnesses and evidence related to November 1984 Sikh genocide to the Australian ministry of foreign affairs.

Australia won't don anything about this, though its important to see if as per UN , anti-Sikh riots were Genocide.

Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide

Australia indeed cant force Indian govt to accept it as genocide but atleast it can term is so.
anyway "genocide" might be too strong a word carrying much greaters implications.

However its times victim families should be given some value and respect and the criminals should be punished to give a sense of justice to the victim families though you cant bring those killed

Congress party bastards did this to our Sikh brothers and sisters

Andross you are just trying to wash hands of hundreds of Hindu Indians who had killed thousands of Sikh Indians, by puting the blame on Congress Party.

those who took part in brutal killing of Sikhs in 84 are not 100% Congress members

What about the hindus who saved sikhs or u will deney it?

Even the former BJP leader vajpayee helped Sikhs

Good of them nobody stops you and me from praising them.

On the other hand a community is judged by the acts of majority and hence you cant not just wash your hands by saying few have saved few while ignoring the fact that hundreds of them have killed thousands of Sikhs.

Yes they are.

Even though 84 was a blot on India, these Aussies have no ******* right to meddle in Indian affairs. 3000 is genocide. Yeah thats right, there were just 2 or 3 aborigines in Australia waving the Union Jack when they weighed anchor there.

Every time there`s a political party who controls the mob to do anything shameful for their political mileage.
If hindus only want to abolish all other religion then there`ll be genocides everyday over here...
Congress is not the party of Hindus alone ...
& I was in Delhi @ that time & know the situation better the dreamers ... I saw the politicians leading mobs & no one can say that mob holds any particular religion... cos I saw many colors in them...

parties are almost mute on that issue that`s the reason we are making it an issue abroad ..

The killing were political as they were result of assassination of Congress Leader Indra Gandhi n not some communal Hindu-Sikh riots, normal people don't go out killing people if some politician dies

Its basically the political party people n their hired thugs who do such act...:hitwall:

As it wasn't cummunal riots as in the case of Partition blaming Hindus for this isn't the right thing...

Hindus n Sikhs have always stood by each other n r always treated like brothers....:)

Like I said before Sikhs grievances will be side lined just like the Muslims.
