Should We Be Afraid of China's New Aircraft Carrier?

Why? What is to be afraid of? Whoever can afford is free to own & operate an AC. There are enough WMD in the world to be afraid of. Its a carrier only.

Besides, it was always a matter of time only... everyone was aware of the intentions of China to have an AC, they can afford many more.

China's carrier can have technical difficulties and sink in Indian ocean as well. So according to you, instead of sending SOS it will send a couple of nukes and sink? Dont rant like an ignorant. Own a brain or ask someone for it before opening your mouth.

China's current aircraft carrier is more like a training ship at best. Its not even nuclear powered. So, no one should be scared.

As of now I'd say India has very little to be worried about regarding the Chinese ACC. IN is also building its own fleet of ACC aswell as operating on ACC right now (Viraat). Reading an article in ""by a Chinese writer, this was the main point- India is the only country in Asia,'and one of the few in the world, to have constantly operated an ACC for well over forty years. This is an immense amount of knowledge and experience that has built up that China simply cannot match as of yet. Operating an ACC in the high seas is an EXTREMELY challenging task and one the IN has done so for many years. As such the IN will find it much easier to induct new ACCs over the coming years and get them out on full deployment quickly then the PLAN witch has to learn in baby steps first. Not to mention the fact that an ACC is only as good as the CBG it is part of and the IN is inducting many capable ships to form an iron wall around her own ACCs- Shivlaik class, Talwar, Kolkata etc.


Also what is the writer saying about an IN officer saying IN has nothing at present or in future to counter? When was this article written? As IAC-2/3 (that are final design stages) will be in 65-70,000 ton category and will most likely have EMALS (interest already expressed by IN) and I highly doubt USN would be happy with selling this tech to PLAN. and also possibly 5th gen fighters (F-35,N-FGFA etc).

May 5, 2011: India announced that it delaying, indefinitely, plans to build any more aircraft carriers. This is being done for several reasons. Most immediately, there is a growing problem with Somali pirates operating off the west coast of India and throughout the Indian Ocean. To deal with this problem, which doesn't appear to be going away soon, Indian warships and land based patrol aircraft have to spend more time patrolling. This is expensive. Another problem is that India has two aircraft carriers entering service in the next few years, and this may be more expensive than planned. Then there is the costly nuclear submarine program, which is getting more pricey, and time consuming, each year.
At the moment, India has only one carrier in service, the 29,000 ton INS Viraat. This ship returned to service two years ago, after 18 months in a shipyard for upgrades and refurbishment. The refurbished Russian carrier Gorshkov (now the 44,000 ton INS Vikramaditya), is supposed to enter service next year. India is also building a 42,000 ton carrier, or Air Defense Ship (ADS) and was planning on starting construction of a second one once the first one was launched. The first ADS ship is expected to enter service in 2012, and the second one was to be ready by 2017. But now, there won’t be a second ADS for at least a decade.

India has operated carriers for half a century, having initially acquired INS Vikrant from Britain in 1961. Vikrant was decommissioned in 1997. India acquired a second carrier, the Viraat, also from Britain, in 1986. When it enters service in 2012, the Vikramaditya will operate sixteen navalized MiG-29 fighters, plus some helicopters. The ADS ship will have a similar aircraft complement to the Vikramaditya.

I am skeptical of this news as work on IAC-2 (ADS-2) wasn't going to be started anyaw until after IAC-1 was commissioned 2013/4 and by then the IN will be even larger and India's defence budget similarly so as the economy continues to soar. I
And I don't believe the pirate problem is really tying up the entire Western fleet- IN/MoD know what they're doing on this front, only time will tell.

This is not credible enough to stop the 2nd Carrier. Its already on drawing board.

Guys,why this thread is still running.2 medium carriers will enter service with IN by 2014.Design work on first of the two 70000 ton carriers is already underway.Besides india is transforming the Andaman Nicobar islands in full scale military hub.There will be stationed some of the submarines,surface ships and also multiple airbase are under construction.So in IOR at such a long distance from mahnland china the aircraft carrier will become deadmeat at best.Actually 5 years from now,after the completion of the andaman base nothing chinese from south china sea can enter IOR unharmed at a time of hostility.
Regarding anti ship ballistic missile capability,well,we already have one.The Shaurya hypersonic hybrid missile-with its 2000 km range(300 kg payload),cep of 10-15 meters and ability to alter its course like a cruise missile at hypersonic speed can actually work much better than the chinese DF 21 antiship ballistic missile.

Arey ye Chini abhi carrier bana rahe hain abhi use chalana, uthana, bithana, nachana aur wo sab kuch karna jo itne bade ship ko yudh ke dauran karna padta hai sikne mein abhi samay lagega.
Itne bade ship ko Yudh mein Sambhalna aasan kam nahi hai
