Should Bangladesh join SCO?

Did you know we were the founding memeber of original ASEAN but after 1971, the Pakistan name was dropped and no subsequent government pursued to replace the name Pakistan with Bangladesh.

Really?? Can you give me the source? I thought it was formed by indonesia, malaysia, singapore., thailand and the philipines. Bangladesh and pakistan are both (as of now) are ASEAN Regional forum members not full members.

Well, I forgot the name of the previous organization which was basically a security pact than a economic pact like ASEAN. I will update once i find the source.

Bangladesh should join all international bodies so that there is greater trade and security.

.

@ Was it SEATO(South East Asia Treaty Organisation) ? Whose HQ was located at Manila. East Pakistan was one of the member.

No.

More the countries involved, easier is the dialogue even at the bilateral level, since the situation is known by the discussions in various fora.

Like G8 and now G20.

These have the Finance Ministers and the Central Bank head and so much of the internal issues are sorted out.

Pakistan was a member of SEATO and not East Pakistan.

SEATO or the Manila Pact was head-quartered in Bangkok IIRC.

Pakistan was a member because it was considered as South East Asian. But as soon as it lost East Pakistan so lost its membership. Bangladesh should had been taken initiative to stay as member of that group and later become a member of ASEAN. Neither Sheikh Mujib nor Ziaur Rahman taken initiative rather they opted for good for nothoing SAARC.

Yes SEATO. Thanks for reminding.

Pakistan did not lose the membership.

They walked out after the 1971 War and then IIRC France quit and then it was all over.

It was a loose alliance and not like the NATO.

why cant you understand the simple logic??? pakistan was there because it was east pakistan. After 1971 they gone westward. Heard of name Sohrawardy?? He was the one behind joining SEATO.

The Manila Pact (SEATO) was organised to prevent communist gains in Southeast Asia. Manila Pact was signed in 1954 and SEATO came into existence in 1955. It was dissolved on 30 June 1977.

Pakistan was a member of the CENTO or Baghdad Pact to contain USSR. It was organised in 1955. It was dissolved in 1979.

Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy was Prime Minister of Pakistan from 12 September 1956 to 17 October 1957.

Before that it was Chaudhari Md Ali.

So, what is the connection with Suhrawardy? He was not even the PM of Pakistan when the Treaties came into being. Or what has East Pakistan to do with containing Communism that Pakistan could not do (when it was the member of SEATO and not merely East Pakistan)?

I have not understood the connection or the simple logic of yours that you to say I have not understood.

What benefit will bangladesh get if it joins SC0? What problem it will face after joining SC0??

The name was SEATO, South East Asian Treaty Organization. But, it was a military pact and now long dead. It probably has nothing to do with trade and business.
