Shortfall reaches 5,000MW as power outages hit Pakistan amid ongoing heatwave

PMLN and PPP signed guaranteed income (capacity charge) contracts with these IPPs
PPP IPP contracts based on Furnace oil were a disaster, the motives were to make money. Mushy did Jack Shit. PMLN at least tried to fix the power crisis by installing Coal, Hydro, Natural gas, Renewables based plants etc.

Shouldn't it be closer to western countries? About 250000MW.

It is not like this, all the kitchen stoves and ovens runs on gas here in Pakistan, in western countries almost all are electric ovens and electric stoves.

Similarly water heaters, called geysers are all gas run and operated, unlike in the west where all are electric run and operated.

Natural gas consumption per capita in Pakistan is 5 times that of India.

Electricity consumption in India per capita is higher, many graphs gives a figure of 0.5 times higher, old figure though.

PPP furnace oil contracts were a disaster but they were not as many as plmn. The bulk of power sector circular debt is a result of plmn era contracts.

The moment one understands the problem is not actually with the type of plants be it RLNG ( coal is debatable as they are imported coal power plants, now coal has surpassed $100 by a margin) but the IPP policy be it 2015 or from ppp era under which these plants are installed.

All that was needed was to get concessional loans or even float bonds or take loan from WB ADB and install the same plants on our own, but alas we are now trapped for a decade.

The other term for this policy is an extortion contract. There are no synonomous examples of such deals any where in the world. Can anyone give an example of such contract with such rate of returns in any other country?

So it's not a power transmission issue?

Sir imo the problem is when we say installed capacity that does not mean it is accessible all over the country. Every area is dependent on a limited number of plants.
This is a transmission issue as if one plants fails the backup plants generation is not accessible due to lack of transmission or limited capacity of transmission to bear that extra load.

In karachi there is no loadshedding when tarbela or mangla goes out of order like now we have no power outages, it affects particular areas. If port qasim generation falls or some other local ones than there is loadshedding in just karachi hyderabad etc like just a week or so ago.

Our installed capscity is just a fictional number and is useless because it has no practical application apart from capacity payments.

Easy said than done, Mushy tried PPP tried. Has IK attempted this formula? Its very easy to be wise after the event. Had the progress not been disrupted and the growth rate maintained we would not be debating. As a nation we tend to find FAULTS even if someone tried to increase our Power Capacity after three decades.

Sir you still dont get it. Capacity increase has no relevance if people dont use it. It has to be afforbadle for it to be utlilized. It becomes a liability instead of an asset.

I have 7 AC in my house, aik bhi chalatay huay jan nikal jati hai. Only for extreme conditions when one can not bear the heat. It is useless to a common person. Same goes for industries.

What is our peak demand. The increase in installed capacity is hugely dispropotionate and disorganized ( you have plants where you dont need them and vice versa) as compared to demand growth.

Sir that 234b figure is correct but it is not what you think it is. This is a classic example of quoting data out of context to portray a particular picture that suits his narrative.

What the report says is cost of production from LNG plants is 234b less than if similar amount of electricity was produced from oil/diesel based power generarion. It is exactly a case of using a diesel generator or a gas generator for ones house or running a car on petrol vs diesel. LNG is a cheaper fuel.
If i requote him using a different example, the governemnt paid 4x the amount by using LNG based plants instead of hydel. You get the acrual point?

The figure does not include the rate of returns or capacity payment that comes with the IPP contracts. The fact of the matter is as of today the capacity payment alone is more than the actual cost of generarion.

As i stated before had these plants been setup on our own instead on IPP policy basis the gains would have been immense. This is where the actual fault lies.

Now coming to the second point regarding thar coal, this in itself is a charge sheet against imported coal based power plants like sahiwal. Imagine the import savings had we setup all those plants on local coal. Plmn itself said local coal is expensive thats why they went for imported ones, in reality it was just a case of economy of scale.

Didn't Imran Khan Munafiq Nazi - Munafiqat makes great leaders - say that we are making surplus electricity.

Or did Imran Nazi lie?

Makes you wonder if iMRAN Nazi has ever said a word of truth in his life. He will probably die if he speaks truth

as soon as I start thinking that this forum cannot possibly go any lower in to the gutter, then you come back and help it plumb new depths in to the sewer.

Can't you read? Without robust transmission system, no one can consume excess electricity

Pmln didn't invest in transmission only energy generation with extremely expensive contractsView attachment 751964View attachment 751965View attachment 751966

Facts? On geo news? 😂😂😂

The the program even shows that PMLN invested on transmission lines not exactly the amount they should have invested but still they did while PTI is the government for 3 years now shouldn't they initiate the transmission lines up-gradation process even if PMLN has made electricity in excess? Also there are a bunch of power plants right now which are under construction under CPEC or IPP etc after completion of those we would have a lot more energy but not the transmission system

I mean this is the dilemma of the different political parties in Pakistan all they want is to blame it on each other but dont want to correct the mistakes like PMLN made the power plants with excess power rather than blame game PTI should have worked on the transmission lines so that we can utilise that power and lower the circular debt by getting bills payments from the consumers NO????

Pakistan can't have a Excess Electricity and Shortages at same time
Someone in middle is messing up with system for political gains

  • Not possible to go from 1500 MW surplus to -5000 MW

Some where in the story their is a Loop

a) Railways derailing in Sindh
b) Electricity Shortages , let me guess must be in Sindh
c) Fire in Bahria Town also in Sindh

The real problem is Cases against PPP top elite boys are coming for decision and people are planning to escape to foreign countries

This chaos is being created to distract the institutions to allow for a soft escape for Elite

Wasn't this Government accusing last Government of installing excess power, how is that we are facing a shortfall now if excess power was in the system? Sounds like bad summer planning.

Issue is the transmission, not the generation of power.

The last Government was stupid enough that they invested massively in power generation but barely put any money for transmission lines.
