Kottayam: 34-year-old Nashida, a native of Erattupetta died after falling from a moving bus last Friday. The manner in which the 8-month pregnant woman from Kerala lost her life due to public apathy, speaks volumes about our dereliction of moral duties as humans. It is a matter worth introspecting.

Eight months into her pregnancy, Nashida boarded a private bus named 'Vazhayil' to commute to her home. After boarding the bus she found that all the seats were occupied, which compelled her to stand in front of the bus by the door. After few minutes when the bus took a turn, Nashida lost her balance and was thrown off the bus, said police.

After the tragic incident, Nashida was rushed to RIMS hospital. She had suffered a major head injury. She underwent an emergency surgery where doctors managed to save the baby boy, while Nashida succumbed on Wednesday. Nashida lived with her husband Thaha and two daughters.

Speaking to The News Minute, Nashida's husband Thaha blamed the fellow passengers who refused to empathise with his pregnant woman, for her untimely and horrific death. He alleges that neither men nor women in the bus offered their seat to the woman in her advanced stage of pregnancy.

The door of the bus was open and Nashida fell straight out on the road. Her younger daughter and sister who had accompanied her also fell inside the bus. Passengers screamed and asked the bus driver to stop. Nashida reportedly lay in a pool of blood.

State Human Rights Commission has sought a report from Kottayam SP and RTO as to why a provision to protect and assist pregnant women was violated. It was on the directive by the State Human Rights Commission in 2016 that the Kerala Motor Vehicle Act was amended to make it mandatory for at least one seat to be reserved for pregnant women in all KSRTC and private buses, reports TNM.

Police charged the bus driver Yadhu under section 279 for rash driving. Later they booked him under section 304 (a) (causing death by negligence).

How can ANYONE not give up sit for a pregnant women? I am guessing it's not unusual for people to ride standing and seats are always hardly available. So why is it that just giving up a sit once so much of a problem? It's not like it's your first time riding standing. This is despicable.

What is sad is that no woman passenger got up to offer her a seat. No sisterhood.

normal day in India, no respect for women or humanity.

Well, other crimes like honor killings happen in Pakistan, and how about the lynching of Mashal Khan.

. . .
for every one mashal khan Indians kill 100 Mashal kumars and kumaris
even in first of 2018 you've killed around a dozen of people

My point is South Asia is full of crimes against humanity. The social structure is such.

Let us not get into a war of what happened where. We should be speaking about how to remove this callousness and apathy from the region.

Feminism 101. They cry all loud for some movie actors dialogue being anti-women. But can't speak against the injustice they do to their own fellow women.
She should've entered from behind the bus, at least one guy would leave a seat for her.

Since you don't have an FM for a long time, you won't understand it. So, it's ok.
