Bangladesh's cricket team left New Zealand on Saturday, less than 24 hours after narrowly avoiding being involved in the worst mass shooting in the country, which now had to accept that sporting events were likely to have been changed for ever.

A lone gunman killed 49 people and wounded more than 20 during Friday prayers at two mosques in Christchurch in the country's worst mass shooting which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern condemned as "a terrorist attack".

The Bangladesh team were on a bus that was approaching the Al Noor mosque, where 41 people died, on the eve of the third test at nearby Hagley Oval when the shooting began.

The test match, which had been scheduled to start on Saturday, was cancelled after the shooting and Bangladesh's tour abandoned.

Violent crime is extremely rare in New Zealand and the Bangladesh Cricket Board said the attacks had now changed their perception about team security on tours.

"We'll demand proper security wherever our team goes in future," BCB President Nazmul Hassan told reporters in Dhaka on Friday. "If a country provides proper security as per our demand, then we will go otherwise not.

"I can say that everything will change after this incident."

Pakistan's Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari also suggested the world governing body, the International Cricket Council, should possibly take a harder line against hosting matches in New Zealand.

"ICC shd take note & perhaps suspend int cricket in NZ after this act of terrorism?" Mazari said on Twitter.

Pakistan has been unable to host matches at home since 2009, when gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lanka team to a match in Lahore. Six of the visiting team were wounded and eight locals killed.

New Zealand have not toured Pakistan since 2002 following a suicide bombing outside their hotel in Karachi and instead played their games in the United Arab Emirates.

They also abandoned a tour of Sri Lanka in 1987 following a bombing near their hotel in Colombo.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said the country would now also need to accept they were no longer immune from acts of extreme violence and that would need to be factored in when they hosted sports events and teams.

"This is shocking. This will change the entire fabric of international sports hosting. I think everything changes now," he said.

"We'll certainly be having to look at our security in depth. I think the idea of New Zealand being a safe haven is gone now.

"We now have to be very, very vigilant - all the authorities and sporting organisations, absolutely."

Excuse me: NZ Cricket board can ask the NZ police to provide security at a public event. When the Bangladeshi sportsmen are alone as private citizens NZ police is not going to protect them unless there is a known threat. this is exactly the way things work in developed countries. your sportsmen are sportsmen. they are not national leaders or diplomats.

Now i m feeling sorry for myself for responding to u. I shouldn't have engaged with u in a debate in the first place.

NZ cricket board is expected to give security to Bangladeshi players for as long as they r staying in that country as the guest of Newzealand cricket board. It doesn't matter whether BD players r playing international match against NZ or practicing in the adjacent training ground or relaxing in their hotel room.......they r expected to get high level security everywhere.

Who will take the responsibility if any terrorist/criminal tries to do any harm to any of the Bangladeshi players while they r practicing on their own? According to ur stupid post since practice session does not come under the category of public event, BD players should not be given any security and should be left alone on their own, right?

Fifty people were killed in terror attacks on two mosques during Jummah prayers in Christchurch on March 15

Honorary Consul of Bangladesh in Auckland Shafiqur Rahman has confirmed the death of five Bangladeshis in the March 15 terrorist attacks in Christchurch.

The deceased are Dr Mozammel Hoque, Omar Faruk, Zakaria Bhuiyan, Husna Ara Parvin and Dr Abdus Samad.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Consul Shafiqur said three others - Motassin Billah, Sheikh Hasa Rubel, and Sajeda Akter Lipi - are receiving treatment in the hospital, with Lipi's condition being critical.

The bodies will be handed over to families on Monday, he added.

Fifty people were killed in terror attacks on two mosques during Jummah prayers in Christchurch on March 15 (Friday).

"We are urging all concerned to communicate through our hotline numbers," he said.

Honorary Consul of Bangladesh in Auckland Shafiqur Rahman can be contacted over his mobile phone (+64 21024 65819).

Two additional numbers for emergency contact are +61 424 472544 and +61 450173035.

Following the gruesome terrorist attacks on the two mosques in Christchurch, the Bangladesh High Commission in Canberra has intensely engaged with the New Zealand authorities for the safety of Bangladeshis in New Zealand, and the early safe exit of the Bangladesh national cricket team from New Zealand.

The incident had happened minutes before the Bangladesh cricket team arrived at one of the mosques.

The High Commission directly and through the Honorary Consul of Bangladesh in Auckland disseminated messages to the Bangladeshis living in New Zealand to remain calm, be indoors, avoid the places of congregation and obey the instructions of law enforcement agencies.

Shafiqur Rahman arrived at Christchurch Saturday morning to extend support to the Bangladeshi victims.

Tamim Iqbal spoke to ESPNcricinfo's Mohammad Isam about ‪the events of Friday afternoon‬, when the Bangladesh team had a brush with death near one of the two mosques in Christchurch that were the target of terrorist attacksthat have claimed at least 49 lives.

Let me tell you what happened before we got on the bus. It will help you understand how those two or three minutes made such a huge difference for us. Normally Mushfiq [Rahim] and Riyad bhai [Mahmudullah] want to be present during the Khudbah [sermon], which is why we want to reach the Jumm'aprayers early. The bus was scheduled to leave ‪at 1.30 pm‬, but Riyad bhai had gone to the press conference. A bit of time was spent there, and after finishing the press conference, he came to the dressing room.

In the dressing room, we got engaged in a game of football. Taijul [Islam] didn't want to lose, but the others wanted him to lose in that game. Taijul and Mushfiq were having a one-on-one game, which took up a few more minutes. These little things saved us in the end.

We got on the bus right after that. The plan was to go to the team hotel after prayers, which is why Shree [team analyst Shrinivas Chandrasekaran] and Soumya Sarkar (both non-Muslims) were with us. Since it was optional training, those who weren't going to practice, they'd stay back at the hotel, and those who had practice, they'd come back to the ground. This was the plan.

I always sit on the sixth seat on the left. When we were getting near the mosque, everyone on my right started to see something outside the window. I saw that a body was lying on the floor. Naturally, we thought either he was drunk or had fainted. So then the bus kept going, and stopped near the mosque. But everyone's attention remained with that man lying on the ground.

While that was happening, my attention went to another man, bloodied, and about to fall down. Panic set in at that point.

Our bus stopped in front of a car near the mosque. We saw that the bus driver was talking to a lady who was literally shaking and crying. She was saying, 'There's some shooting going on, don't go, don't go'.

'There's shooting here, please save us'

That was the time we couldn't control ourselves. We started screaming, 'let us go!' Someone said, 'What if they shoot us when we get out?' Someone else said, 'We are in danger if we are stuck in the bus.' I also felt that we would have a chance to escape if we got out of the bus. We become a big target in the bus. But where will we go? Both doors are closed.

Right at that point, for some reason, the driver took the bus 10 metres ahead. I don't know why he did this. We were at breaking point at that point. Everyone lost it. We started to bang the middle door. We were kicking and punching that door. He opened the door.

When he took the bus forward, I started calling you. You thought I was joking. I was not in a position to tell you, 'Isam bhai I am being serious.' You heard me, right? I lost my mind when I saw Mazhar [Uddin, another journalist] calling me. I didn't know what was happening.

It was about eight minutes when we finally got out of the bus. Everyone said let's run though the park. Someone said that we become easier targets in the park [Hagley Park], what if the shooters just notice us there and start shooting?

The Bangladesh team left Christchurch on Saturday AFP
The next thing that really scared us was how the police may react seeing us running with bags, etc. By that time I saw you three there [Isam and fellow journalists Utpal Shuvro and Mazhar Uddin]. I didn't realise it then but last night, I realised how big a risk you three took.

There will be very few people on earth who will take that risk. I don't think many close people would have turned up in that situation, like you came. I actually got relieved when I saw you guys. Then we all started to walk. By the time we had gone a fair distance, everyone started to run towards the ground [Hagley Oval].

You know, you had seen death with your own eyes. Your body goes cold. It was something we will never forget. And it is such a thing, it is getting worse with every hour we pass. I have spoken to a lot of my team-mates, and everyone is talking about it. The good thing is that everyone still has a little smile on their face. But trust me, inside, everyone is shattered.

We returned to the team hotel and went straight to Riyad bhai's room. We started to watch the shooter's video. The players started to weep, like they were doing in the dressing room.

One thing for sure, Isam bhai, it will take a long time to get over. I hope the families help us. We might need counselling. I close my eyes, and I am seeing those scenes. Last night most of the cricketers slept in groups. I slept with [Mehidy Hasan] Miraz and [masseur Mohammad] Sohel bhai. I dreamt that those guys are shooting in a bike.

On our way to the airport, we were telling each other that if things had gone wrong by even a little bit, it would have been our dead bodies, not us, going home. It was just a matter of 30 seconds.

Racist Australians.
Yes and Pashtuns, Uzbeks and Tajiks are saints.

Well I have to agree with you. All supposedly white majority countries are doing squat against these white nationalists and their homegrown white terrorists.

It plays into their game of discouraging brown and black immigration into their countries they stole from brown and black natives hundreds of years ago.

They are targeting Jewish folks as well. We must stand with the Jewish at this grave time and ask for armed guards at all places of worship in the Western world. Either the govt. pays for it or we will have to look after our own somehow - because these govts. cannot prevent these bloodbaths.

These white nationalists are desperate - as they know their status quo days of exploiting browns and blacks as an 'acceptable treatment' are numbered.

Hence this targeted activity and their govts. doing next to nothing while espousing and blaring about 'rule-of-law' in other countries.

I am definitely not visiting New Zealand after this and will tell everyone in my friend circle. Totally incompetent - the way this was handled by Christchurch police.
One attack in New Zealand and you won't visit that country? What about Bangladesh where Holy Artisan incident took place, The Ramu temple violence took place? Will you say the same for Bangladesh too?
