12 more killed in firing by forces, Kashmir tense

Srinagar (PTI): Protests in the tense Kashmir region spread in escalating violence that left another 12 people dead in firing by security forces as authorities clamped curfew in all the ten districts in the Valley for the first time in 13 years.

Amid pro-freedom slogans, the body of senior Hurriyat Conference leader Shiekh Abdul Aziz, who was killed in police firing on Monday, was laid to rest at Eidgah graveyard here on Tuesday.

Defying curfew in force in Srinagar city since yesterday, thousands of people led by separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mohammad Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq attended the burial amid calls for maintaining peace.

The death toll in firing by security forces rose to 18 today. Six persons including Aziz were killed in Monday's firing during a march towards Muzaffarabad by thousands of protestors against the "economic blockade" in the Jammu region by the group spearheading the Amaarnath agitation.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration extended the curfew to all the 10 districts in the Kashmir valley as tension prevailed following the death of Aziz and angry protests continued for the second day today after curfew was defied at several places. Yesterday, curfew was clamped only in Srinagar district and along a 40-km stretch from Sheeri to Uri town in Baramulla district.

Giving details of Tuesday's incidents in the Valley, official sources said Army opened fire at Aribal in Bandipora killing three persons and injuring eight others.

Defence spokesman Lt. Col. Mathur said the Army fired in self-defence as the protesters tried to storm their camp. "The protesters had run over the police party there and broke open the gate of the camp, forcing the jawans to open fire in self-defence," he said.

The Lasjan incident occured after the service weapon of a personal security guard of PDP leader Javid Mustafa Mir went off 'accidentally' injuring seven police personnel including IPS officer Mahesh Kumar, official sources said.

Kumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Saddar area), was hit by a bullet in the leg and has been admitted in hospital along with the other injured policemen. Three persons including a 70-year-old woman were killed in the police firing after the incident involving Mir's security guard.

Two persons succumbed to injuries sustained in Monday's police firing which had already claimed the lives of four persons including Aziz.

A youth was killed and 20 others injured when police opened fire on protestors in Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district, the sources said, adding the deceased has been identified as Mohammad Saleem Shah.

Two persons including a cameraman of a local cable tv channel were killed when CRPF troops opened fire on protestors in Bagh-e-Mehtab area of Srinagar. The victims were identified as Mohammad Imran and cameraman Javed Ahmad Mir.

Indian security forces today fired into a crowd that had gathered for the funeral of a prominent Kashmiri separatist leader who was shot dead yesterday, killing three people.

The shootings, on the second day forces had fired into the crowd, came amid rising violence in Indian Kashmir, India's only Muslim majority state.

The violence has seen many parts of the region, including the winter capital, Srinagar, put under curfew.

The roots of the crisis lie in a tug of war between the state's Hindus and Muslims over 100 acres of land.

Tensions escalated after a blockade of the highway by Hindu groups cut off the mountainous Kashmir region, where Muslims predominate, from the plains of Jammu, where Hindus are the majority.

As a result, traders in Kashmir have been trying to sell their goods in neighbouring Pakistan.

Kashmiri separatists called on protesters to continue their march to Muzaffarabad, in Pakistani Kashmir, today.

Yesterday, Sheik Abdul Aziz, a senior figure in the separtist Hurriyat Conference, was killed along with four other people as they attempted to cross the disputed border with Pakistan. More than 150 were injured.

"Sheikh Aziz's death is big loss to the Kashmir nation … we will take his mission to its logical end," Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chairman of Hurriyat, told Indian television.

Violence began when the state government handed over 100 acres of land for pilgrimage facilities to be built at a popular Hindu shrine at Amarnath, in the Himalayas, in May.

The land dispute has deeply divided Indian Kashmir, and this week has seen some of the region's worst religious rioting.

Spiralling violence has shattered the relative peace of the past four years in Indian Kashmir, which is also known as Jammu and Kashmir.

The state could still face a violent insurgency, but tensions had eased after India and Pakistan agreed to a peace process in 2004

All-party meet inconclusive

After deliberating for more than ninety minutes and pondering over various options to resolve the ongoing crisis in Jammu and Kashmir, the all-party meet headed by Union home minister Shivraj Patil remained inconclusive even as a sort of broad “roadmap” has been worked out.

Leaders of all the parties meet again tomorrow morning and suggest the possible options, which will be then tabled before the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday.

Members of the all-party delegation, which returned from a visit of Jammu and Srinagar yesterday, met at the North Block today. Patil later told mediapersons that various issues have been discussed and the number of people who are agitating is far less than what is being shown on TV. He added that the media should not exaggerate the numbers.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that leaders of all the parties made it clear that the first priority is to cool down tempers in Jammu and also Kashmir and bring about peace. Both the sides of this strife-torn state have to be satisfied, said a senior leader. The possibility of including the Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti members for talks is not being ruled out in the coming days.

One of the formula suggested is that the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Board build pre-fabricated structures and hand them over to the Amarnath Shrine Board for the period of the yatra. Once the yatra is over the same structures may be pulled down and then re-constructed each year. In this manner the land stays as it is while the shrine board runs its own affairs in conducting the Yatra and providing facilities.

Meanwhile, in the evening Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari criticised the statements made by some valley-based leaders who had threatened that they would prefer going to Muzzafarabad in *** saying that the Government was all set to deal with separatists. He blamed the BJP of putting its own agenda ahead of national interest. Irresponsible statements have been made by leaders that there was no blockade of the crucial Jammu-Srinagar highway, he said.

Jammu agitation a fight of nationalist forces: BJP

Chandigarh (PTI): The BJP on Sunday claimed the agitation in Jammu over the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board land transfer controversy is a "nationalist movement to throw out anti-Indian forces" out of the country.

In a statement, BJP's investor cell and the party's Punjab state chief Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal said the "row is not between Jammu Hindus and Kashmiri Muslims as branded by some section of the media but rather a fight of nationalist forces against separatist elements".

"You can see Hindus, Sikhs and even Muslims out on roads to support the movement," he added to corroborate his claim.

Grewal further claimed that the movement is not restricted to relinquish the land to the shrine board but "it's a movement of four lakh Kashmiri Pandits who are bearing the brunt of being refugees in their own country for over 19 years and it's a movement of every Indian who consider Jammu and Kashmir as integral part of India".

"This public outcry is to throw out each and every separatist out of this country so that people of Jammu and Kashmir and rest of India could shun fear forever and live in peace and tranquillity," he asserted.

He also said the Congress-led UPA Government had "failed" miserably to pacify agitators and sense public mood. Grewal demanded that the UPA Government should accede to the demand of people and restore control of forest land back to the shrine board immediately.

He further cautioned the government saying that defying the wishes of the people is playing with fire and every Indian is watching the situation. "If the government will not relinquish control of the land immediately to the shrine board then every road and every Indian will lead to Jammu and Kashmir," Grewal added.

It is an indian plan to divide the hurriyet into so-called moderate and extremist factions. Purpose is to pit the people of kashmir against each other, Hamas v/s Fatah style. Fortunately our leadership saw through the ploy and the hurriyet leaders have patched up and there is no such thing as a moderate hurriyet or an extremist hurriyet. There are those who oppose the mujaahideen so they may be more acceptable on indian tv and may be welcome at south block and the american embassy, and there are those who don't.

By parroting indian propaganda you are unconsciously playing into their hands. I'd suggest you not to use the terms "moderate" and "extremist".

We have 'leaders' who bring the people out on the streets to face bullets, then sit at home awaiting house arrest. Shaheed Sheikh Abdul Aziz wasn't one of those. He was one who marched up front, facing the bullets. He didn't hide behind the crowd. May the supreme sacrifice of each martyr ignite the fury of revenge in all our hearts.

J&K is recognized as disputed by the international community and the UN - the land this idiot wants to throw them out of is their land, not his personal Jagir.

Given the legal status of J&K as disputed, the separatists have every right to struggle (peacefully) for their cause. It is when people like these deny even the moderates the right to a peaceful campaign, or refuse to accept that grievances even exist, that extremism rises.
