ISLAMABAD : Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif on Friday served a legal notice to the British publication Daily Mail for accusing him of embezzling public funds.

The July 14 article accused Shehbaz of misusing funds allocated for earthquake victims. David Rose, the author of the article, has also been named in the legal notice served by Shehbaz’s counsel in London.

The PML-N president’s counsel, in the notice, argued that “the article is gravely defamatory of Mr Sharif, including false allegations that he misappropriated the UK taxpayer’s money in the form of DFID aid intended for the victims of the devastating 2005 earthquake in Pakistan,” further stating that Shehbaz denies these allegations in the strongest possible terms.

“I am utterly appalled by these allegations. It is disgusting for the Mail to claim that I stole money from a fund for earthquake victims. Clearly were there any evidence in support of this or any other allegations contained in the article against me, then I would have been arrested and charged,” the letter quoted Shehbaz as saying.

The notice further narrated Shehbaz saying that the move looks like “another politically motivated campaign against me and my family by the current government of Pakistan”.

On July 14, a story published the UK-owned publication Daily Mail, accused PML-N leader Shehbaz and his family of embezzling millions of pounds out of £500 million aid lent by the Department for International Development (DFID) for earthquake victims.

As soon as the report surfaced, the party termed it a conspiracy against the opposition leader in the National Assembly hatched by the government.

Hours after the development, the DFID refuted claims made by The Mail of aid money being embezzled and laundered by the Sharif family.

Rejecting the assumption that UK taxpayers’ cash meant for earthquake victims was stolen by Shehbaz, DFID maintained that “our robust systems protected UK taxpayers from fraud”.

No legal notice,

I even don't think this letter is even served or send to daily mail.

Just doing some showbzi for the patwarees to cheer

I think Shahbaz Sharif is right in this case. I remember back in 2008 we used to talk about earthquake funds being disappeared and blame the Mushaaraf government, Federal, Punjab and Ajk government. There was a lot of talk about Chaudhry brothers too... that is all before election 2008 and the funding was received and disappaeared between 2005 to 2007/8.

It doesnt make sense to blame a guy who was not even in the country and if 10-20% funds were left somewhere in the government accounts... it will be difficult to prove that he took that money for himself

PS: Almost entire donation for earthquake was a matter of AJk government and Federal and Punjab had little say on it

In any case, a "legal" notice is a notice of one party to another, in a civil dispute, and, as such, has no legal value. In fact, it is a written threat of legal action, if the demands put therein are not fulfilled.

Lets see if Showbaaz has any balls of steels to take Daily mail to court, the whole thing will be exposed. I am still waiting for Godfather league to take Penthouse and Panama papers journalists to court??

Ok, I think the case will become interesting when showbaz will actually file a case against Daily Mail in UK court

The funds being talked about are in the period when Shahbaz was CM. The funds were not only for earthquake but other disasters also e.g. 2010 Floods, the funds were handled by ERRA. (Do u see the DailyMail and investigators are that big fools that they dont know who the CM Punjab was when funds were embezzled?)
