Islamabad: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's ouster through illegal means could trigger another round of democracy-related US sanctions against Pakistan, according to a report.
A congressional reported titled 'Pakistan Political Unrest' warns that "any overt military ouster" of Sharif "could trigger another round of democracy-related US sanctions on foreign assistance to Pakistan", the Dawn said on Wednesday.

This could put "an indefinite halt to what has been one of the highest-priority American aid programmes since 9/11."

The report also warns that the ongoing political crisis could impact Pakistan's relations with India by increasing the powerful army's influence in foreign policies, the paper said.

The "Army's more openly direct control of Pakistan's foreign and security policies may, over time, shift Pakistan's approach towards Afghanistan further into a policy framework that seeks to counter Indian influence there," warns the report prepared by the Congressional Research Service (CRS).

The report notes that while the Sharif government does not face an imminent ouster, "many observers see the current unrest weakening Sharif".

It also represents "a setback to democratisation in a country that has suffered three outright military coups in its 67 years of independence".

The report informs US lawmakers that despite the protest, Pakistan is unlikely to change its foreign or security policies that are of interest to the United States.

The unrest could "present new challenges to the goal of improving India-Pakistan relations, and put a damper on hopes for effective regional cooperation and commerce in South Asia," said author Alan Kronstadt, CRS specialist in South Asian affairs.

"Whether Sharif sought out or merely acceded to the army's late August intervention as a facilitator between the government and the protesters, most analysts contend that because he has not demonstrated civilian control over domestic security he will be left in a weakened state," the report says.

CRS warns that the army's involvement could have negative implications for US efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s democratic governance institutions as well.

"Observers doubt, however, that the army would seek to take direct control of the government, not least as it is embroiled in offensive operations against Islamist militants in western tribal areas," the report says.

The army, however, might welcome "a soft coup in which popular support for the civilian government is reduced such that the army can take full control of foreign and security policies".

The report came in the wake of nearly a month-long protest by Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan and Awami Tehreek head Tahir-ul Qadri demanding Sharif's ouster.

Khan wants Sharif's ouster over alleged rigging in last year's poll which his party lost, while Qadri wants to bring a revolution in the country.

Both the leaders are agitating since August 14. At least three people have been killed and over 550 injured during the protests.

That's right. The protests are not targeting foreign or security policies of Pakistan. Ouster of Nawaz is demanded because of his alleged role in widespread rigging of previous elections and also because he and his brother are being investigated for Model Town massacre.

US,India, PPP, MQM, ANP and JUIF, all the parties united against imran khan .. i salute to his determination of Imran Khan . God bless him.

Have a party elected by will of people is greater then any other consideration

After all , we are just requiring the votes to be counted and verified that are not bogus votes

. .
That's says it all, as why this haddharam ganja don't wanna leave the office , cause he knows hes got American backing, but this ganja is not realizing that he's just a stoog, when his time is over he will be thrown away like anything.

Kindly impose the sanctions, we would gladly accept this with open hands, we have survived in the past with our heads high and I have no doubt we would in future.

US policy makers knows this by heart that by putting sanctions on us wont make a big difference and in fact this would be their own loss as they definitely would loose an old ally who took care of their interests in this region since its independence.

This super flood which added further miseries in the already miserable life's of poor Pakistanis, is gonna be a final nail his coffin.

.
This is execillant stratagy to control Pakistan once you control foreign policy thru Ganja shareefs then you will force to implement it where you wil need your army who will obey you like police does then you are good to go to Damage pakistan, like how you selling sugar, onion, rice, tamotto etc to india and india putting Made in India Label and selling in international market just cuz they have wider access to international market. they will slowly control your trade, water is already if you are not blind to see recent flood,
I thnk its time to support Pakistan army without any fear that we gonna have sanctions.
democracy bring us these crupt politicians .. why fear brining yoru own army .. its a propaganda westerner spread we aer not doing well if you look at zardari's 5 years.. they are getting richer and richer ..

Alleged. In Norway, you guilty before proven?? Congress is woeking on impeachment of Obama, but is he stepping down? Do you close a business because you're alleged to do illegal stuff?

u r giving examples of countries where institutions are independent,. sadly that is not the case in Pakistan. If this much rigging evidence will come Obama will kill himself .

Though most of the comments are funny. I can not laugh at them any more. Repetition of the same old things a few thousand times makes even the funniest joke seem lame.

Write this down: NS will stay as PM, IA. There is nothing IK or anyone else can do about it. Keep making noise, while unrealistic demands make you irrelevant. Already hunt for excuses has started and everybody is to be blamed except Hazrat Molana Ala-Hazrat IK sb.

Die-hard IK supporters will eventually become like owls - hooting at anyone who disagrees. I've stopped caring about what they say. They can make all the noise they want. Umpire's finger is no where to be seen and after a few days new promotions will take place in Army and the last of Musharraf's boys will be gone.

So go on hooting now, as the sun comes up, you will have to hide in the shadows.

Nawaz will stay PM, but he will be weakened. There was talk about zardari becoming president again. Let's face it, al though many MNAs support democracy, they'd love to have a pie before outright support. So some ministries or Sindh chosen IG instead of federal chosen IG can happen. Just a few examples.

Nopes . when u have no reply and u know im telling a fact then u try to act stupid. the one who came to support openly are the main culprits.

USA knows that imran khan dont bow down to pressure. HE blocked their supplies before. He will not allow drones. So it nawaz suites them.

Indian biggest enemy is Pakistan army. PM is on bad terms with army so that is why they are supporting them. They know this PM will weaken army in Pakistan.

LEJ: is political allie, they took part in election campaing. law ministers have done joint relies with them. No action was taken against them in 7 years

Achakzai: Made his brother governer and made him a B****

ANP and JUIF: they need PTI to fail for their political survival

PPP: u have notice how the investigation against gillani and raja saab have stopped. There is a pact btw both the sharif and bhutto families . They will not try each other for corruption anymore
