Sharif asks US to stop supporting Pak military

ISLAMABAD: In his first direct contact with the United States after being deposed in 1999, exiled former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked Washington to stop supporting Pakistan's military in order to prevent future army coups in the country.

Sharif told a US Congressional delegation which met him in London recently that no civilian government in Pakistan will ever be able to have control over the army unless Pentagon stops supporting it.

It was because of Pentagon's support that military dictators got "certification of legitimacy" from the US; the former premier told the four-member bipartisan delegation.

"If Pentagon reviewed its policy, there would be no military intervention in the future," Dawn quoted a leader of Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) as saying.

The same Congressional delegation arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday and met Musharraf. This was the first contact by US lawmakers with Sharif during his life in exile over the past six years.

Three congressmen in the team were Democrats while the fourth was Republican. Sharif gave the Congressmen his assessment of the situation in Pakistan with some ideas to strengthen democracy.

He complained that the US was not playing the role it should to prevent military interventions.

"We feel let down by the policy of President George W Bush, especially when he says that restoration of democracy is Pakistan's internal matter," the PML-N leader reportedly told the delegation.

Considerable time was devoted during the meeting to steps required to ensure free and fair elections. PML-N leaders believe that US would send observers to monitor the general elections.

Mian Nawaz Sharif was one the most unethical and opportunistic prime ministers in Pakistan's history. Here are a few examples:

1. Nawaz knifed Junejo in the back by not resigning when his "Patron" Zia sacked a civilian government installed by himself.

2. Nawaz passed the 14th ammendment in an unprecedented hurry. This made any discenting voice in his party impossible thus eliminating any possible leadership challange. When he was in prison he made his wife leader of the party !

3. He tried his best to get 15th ammendment thru ( MNA's voted but it got stuck in the Senate). This act would have made Nawaz an "Amirul Mominen" thus impossible for any one to disobey his orders.

4. He orchestrated an attack on the Supreme Court and later bribed other judges to oust their own boss. The money carrier became the President and the henchman became Chief Justice as a reward.

5. He tried to gag the press. Jang Group were given a long list of journalists who should be sacked. When Jang didnot oblige, their news print paper quota was eliminated on the pretext that they were selling the excess on the black market.

6. All the cases on PPP members and the opposition were started by his henchman Sen. Saifur Rahman. Most of these cases are still undecided.

7. He wrote off hundreds of millions in loans to his family and his cronies. Could you believe that his left tit, Senator Saifur Rahman actually sued a bank for the loss of potential profits because the bank did not approve his loan!!!

8. Nawaz allowed hundreds of millions of dollars to be transferred out by his family and his friends just before the FE deposits were frozen on his instructions.

9. He changed the duty laws on cars imported by Saif Rahman's company and a month after the importation was complete increased the duty again. All thru an official ordinance.

My point is that Nawaz Sharif should have the decency to look at his own actions before advising a third country.

It is regretable but the othe democratic leader ( Benazir) has done not much better either and the present government is also not "Lily white". But two wrongs dont make a right. There is a dearth of good, honest and dedicated politicians in Pakistan. Politics should be to serve the people but in Pakistan it is a route to get "Rich" !!!.

Wow! If he did all that, then he doesnt deserve to go back to his country!
To think i thought he was one of the good rulers of Pakistan.

Lahori Paa Jee where are you?

Webby i knew someone would be missing my response. NS par blame aur main chup rahon ho hi nahi sakta. Every point made by Niaz makes me mad.

I dont want to reply to every point but Mush can be accused of everything Niaz mentioned in his msg.

Lahori Paa Jee where are you?

Webby even bending backwards no body.and i mean no body can deny whats being said by niaz.and these are only few of the things.the only seat this guy deserves in pakistan include black and red wire.Zap:GUNS:

Didnt Mush sack his patron and mentor

Didnt Mush end a civilian government

What do u have to say about the LFO, the PCO and the 17th amendment

What about Rafiq Tarar

How could u forget CJ Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui and the five other judges who were retired forcefully after they refused to take oath under PCO

Presidential reference, non-functional CJ, keepin him incommunicado and then sending him on forced leave. This is the worst attack on judiciary

And the extra judicial killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti

A miserable defeat in Kargil and then a U-turn on Kashmir policy

What about Musharrafs state in Bani gala

The same NAB was used by MUSH to buy the loyalties of Nabzaddas (the sitting ministers)

And 2007 marks 8 years of Mush in power and yet you blame NS and BB of being power hungry

Now you must understand that Sharif is no different than Musharraf or Musharraf is no different than Sharif. Due to limited options we can however trust Musharraf more due to the current state of Pakistan, than go back and repeat the history. In all three BB, NS, and GM. We can trust GM the most.

I would disagree webby. Successive military rules have weakened the federation. Why do u want to trust another dictator. We had enough of Ayub, Yahya, Zia and now Mush.

Do you think Fata, NWFP and Baluchistan would be same as they were. Can their be peace in those areas again. Will any civilian government be able to establish its writ again.

Normal reaction in Pakistan to any criticism of their favourite leader is that others did the same. I have no hesitation in admitting this. I repeat that two wrongs dont make a right. If I am caught stealing I cannot plead " Why are you catching me when you are not catching others". A wrong doing is wrong doing.

Every thing I wrote was what I read in the press and I missed out the case against PPP leadership which was sent for "retrial" by the Supreme Court because a telephone conversation "voice tape" was produced where Shahbaz Sharif ( then CM of Punjab) was telling one of the Lahore High Court judges to impose maximum sentence on Asif Zardar and Benazir. Because I have lived abroad very long, I have no particular political associations, when we were living in Pakistan my family normally voted for Muslim league ( Convention).

" Is hammam main sub nangey" meaning all are naked in this bath room or in other words no one is clean and it is a question of chosing the least bad. This is our great misfortune that we had lousy leaders. My main point remains that on what moral authority can Nawaz Sharif ask US to stop supporting Pak military. Benazir is at least not saying that. She is only pleading to US that She can do more to help US interests than Mushy can. What is Nawaz offering???

Sir,

When will Pakistan get out of this Syndrome;

After the partition Nehru did extremely smart thing.he took land away from big landlords.mean not 1 person was allowed to hold lot of power.on the other hand Pakistan did not do that.and thats why we are paying for it now.what i never understood in Pakistan is these people that come out burn tires and destroy government and private property.what do they get out of it at the end of the day.:disagree:

Socialism did its good in India at one point of time, I have to agree.
otherwise i will be still dirt poor.

Keeping my Nationality aside, Pakistan really have to come out of the mess that it is in; now and fast.

Burning tires and destroying properties, We have our share of them too. Hopefully they will decline one-day; i dont see that happening anytime soon though

Not that I doubt what you have posted, but do you have a credible source for most of those claims?
