Shamsi One Pakistani Students Made First Solar Plane

This thread actually reminded me, there is an EOD robot that NUST students from SEECS made a few years back, no one took interest in it, and it is sitting gathering dust in the Islamabad campus.

imagine we have solar drone faying all day on TTP search and use batteries at night a 24/7 terror on snakes.

Its a bit more than that for surveillance drones.

1. Payload
2. Weight
3. Endurance
4. Distance

Now, in payload you will have
1. surveillance equipment
2. batteries
3. communication equipment

Then you need to define endurance. How long do you want it to fly? The longer you need it to fly, the better has to be your battery tech to keep the thing charged. Also, if you need it to fly longer you will need to ensure more batteries. Which is going to make it heavier. You now need more power.

Distance
This will define how far you want this to go. And how high you want this to fly. The higher you want it to go, the more powerful you will need your surveillance equipment. The farther you want it to go then more powerful your communication system.

Now, to come up with a 24/7 surveillance mechanism you will need dedicated teams doing each of these. Not to mention, you will have drafts of wind and weather abnormalities.

This while an encouraging effort, is what is basically an assembly start. You now need the above to be put in place before you can start working on a prototype. This will require model tests and crash tests.

Better option is ask industry to fund laboratory in your version of the IITs. Let students work on this over a period of 5 to 10 years. It will give better results, than somebody hiring these boys and it not developing further students.

I hate to be the killjoy here but every few months there is such a fluff piece in the news about how our students have made "drone" and "ornithopter". And what it usually is a good effort on the students' part which is oversold so much by the press that it makes everyone look like an idiot.

This is a badly made hobby plane with solar panels stuck on top. Hundreds of these are built every year across Pakistan by hobbyists and in universities which are much better. At the risk of selling my own chooran, aerospace engineering students at Institute of Space Technology Islamabad make many such projects each year which have MUCH better build quality than these and are sometimes more than just hobby aircraft. I don't ever see those in the news. And I shouldn't. It's not a big deal.

This kind of ignorance on part of the general media and the hoohaa about nothing reflects badly upon the professionals of the country who actually work on serious projects with zero recognition.

Rant over.

Not my intention brother my apologies. If you would like to feel better though, if you're in the Islamabad area try visiting institute of space technology and their uav lab. You'll have to know someone there though, the place is SPD controlled so they don't let everyone in without a reason. Go see what quality work is done regularly right here in pakistan. Your standards of what you think pakistani students do, should go up. :)

There is even a solar HALE project from 2007 there.

Man you did it again!!!
I live right next to IST.
And if they would have let me in during Admissions i would be studying there. I had admission there. IN AEROSPACE. I needed some information regarding payment of fee. I went there. They didn't let me in.(Security Reasons) They called admissions office from the gate. That damned operator sent me on wild goose chase. And when the entire week passed i came to know that they cancelled my admission. I was made to think i had another week for payment. When i brought this to Directors office. He demanded to KNOW THE IDENTITY OF That operator. How the hell was I supposed to know that!!!!

On Topic You are absolutely right. I know people who graduated from there somewhat of same view. I still lament the loss of my opportunity. Anyway Their Open House is coming in May or June. It will great for any Aero enthusiast to visit then.

As any researcher knows, taking a project from successful lab tests to the commercial market is extremely difficult. Let alone taking it to the military.

CAN IT FLY????

Concept is already there. But, its Pakistani student who strive and redo the concept. Solar plane already flew around the world. But concept always execute from first stage of jet propulsion labs...
Pakistani universities need huge sum for R&D, unfortunately, our staff is so result orientated that they believe spending money on testing or development is waste time and money. Majority of development you see in news is mainly fiance by student themselves .

Well I didn't know the back story :p

Here is test flight
Test flight

How is this Pakistan's FIRST solar plane? I mean I know this isn't anyone's intention but we are telling the world that Pakistan is so backward that we tested our first R/C solar plane in 2016 -_-

Like I previously mentioned I've seen solar aircraft in 2007 at IST (and it's actually a 4m or something wingspan so its hardly a toy). I wish I could've found a picture of it. I'll keep trying. It looks something like this:

Also the Design Build and Fly Competition at GIKI held each year has a Solar Powered Category (since 2015) in which dozens of solar powered aircraft are there each year.
