Key Highlights
India opted to rest Mohammed Shami along with Yuzvendra Chahal in their Headingley clash against Sri Lanka. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja, respectively, replaced the pair in the team's final ICC World Cup 2019 league tie. India comfortably scripted a seven-wicket win in the game en route to their chase of 256 to finish top of the table on the points table. While the change in playing XI can be seen as a sheer plan of resting key players or looking at other options ahead of the big games, one of the cricket experts from Pakistan read a little too deep into it. He felt Shami was benched because of BJP's agenda of not allowing Muslim's to progress.

Shami was included in India's playing XI after the first-choice option, Bhuvneshwar Kumar suffered a hamstring injury in the Pakistan tie. Since his entry into the lineup, Shami has ruled the headlines in India's next four games picking 14 wickets which include two four-wicket hauls and a fifer as well. He also became the second Indian bowler to take a World Cup hat-trick, en route to his 4/40 against Afghanistan. Shami was then rested in the match against Sri Lanka and fit-again Bhuvi was given a go instead.
Talking about the particular change in India's last league game, a Pakistani panellist, in one of the nation's news channels expressed disappointment at the move. He instead felt that the team must have faced pressure from BJP to bench the pacer.

“I wouldn’t have dropped. The bowler who has picked 14 wickets in only three matches (4 matches). You’ve benched him suddenly. He was also approaching a record. He would’ve also come in top two or three in the leading wicket-takers’ list. I can’t understand. I think there is pressure on the team to bench Shami. I think BJP’s agenda of not letting the Muslims progress is the reason for Shami being benched,” he said.

This isn't the first time that religion has been brought into match discussions while talking about Shami. Earlier last week, former Pakistani cricket Abdul Razzaq, while speaking as one of the panellists on Geo TV, hailed 'musalman' Shami's effort while accusing the other bowlers of not giving their best in India's defeat against England.
Meanwhile, Shami is expected to return to the playing XI in the semis where India will face New Zealand. The match is slated to take place in Manchester on July 9.
