Shame For India

This is a pretty useful text, and seems to be a prescribed syllabus for Calicut Uni's BA program. Especially revealing is page 39, in the context of your assertion about Brahmins being barred from owning Land.

As i said , am describing what existed in the Verna system that system was not entirely followed , the caste system during the Gupta period is on of births and not one of Merits ....

Also note that the people living in the Gupta empire was known to by prosperous , Nalanda university and several other universities which was accessible to all was constructed under during the Gupta Dynasty . So i refuse to believe such practices where followed through out the empire

Yup...a system that probably started as a social meritocracy was soon hijacked into a birth-centric kleptocracy.

My question is: Can we reverse it now at least, knowing that it's wrong to condemn/elevate people by their birth alone? That way, we can still retain the Varna system, as it's a uniquely Hindu identity, but also ensure it's not unfair over anyone.(I'm quite ok to give up my position as a Brahmin if there's a worthy Shudra/Dalit ready to take my place!)

The Verna system cannot be implemented due to technology and attitude of young people today , the restrictions in the system would make people mad...Imagine asking Sonia Gandhi and the politicians to be restricted to be without wealth or land ...

The current system is as close as we can get to the Verna system ....

Do you own a copyright or something on these ideas? As I said, stop being obnoxious, or you'll be replied in kind. Be respectful, and we'll meet you halfway with equal respect.

I know it's practically next to impossible to revert back to the Varna system of old. But I'm not a supporter of Reservations based on caste system that we have today. It has only convoluted the system further. I would like to see reservations based on economic considerations.

I lost too much because of that reservation system .....

Self-deprecation is the best form of humour....If you're making jokes, let it be at the expense of Pakistanis. What say?

and I do that most of the time
Cool! Just that I haven't seen it so far. In your original post, you'd explicitly said no pun intended, and that sort of made me assume something else about you.

Let puns intended be known beforehand dude...Humor is lost in the dull readings of Text.

There is another aspect to it.

For example even if a Dalit has achieved his/her qualification without reservation, people will assume that person did so due to affirmative action

Yes. It's further cast a doubt on the intellect of lower castes! But as I said, many a deserving candidate has lost out due to positive discrimination on part of the Government. And a Dalit/SC/ST proficient enough to compete in the General Merit category will further eat into the places available for the so-called forward classes.

Will I be asking for too much if, in around 20 years, the Dalits/SC/ST themselves start rejecting quotas and start telling they're good enough to compete with the rest?

Yes. Too much political capital to be made of. Forward caste politicians will lament it, and lower caste politicians will look on it as an inalienable right of their own.
