Shahbagh staged by govt: BNPChief political correspondent, bdnews24.com
Published: 2013-02-10 13:06:45.0 Updated: 2013-02-10 13:06:45.0

BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah has described the mass protests at Shahbagh as a “drama staged by the government.”

“The intelligence agencies are providing funds and logistics support to keep the protests at Shahbagh going . There is no way the government can absolve itself from the charge of trying to use these protests for political mileage,” Hannan Shah told a discussion on Sunday.

‘This is no mass movement, it is all set up.”

“The police control is just fifty yards away from Shahbagh and Jamaat leader Ghulam Azam is barely 100 yards away (in a hospital). Both are witness to this drama,” Shah said.

Shahbagh, now rechristened ‘Projonmo Chattar” (Generation Square) became the centre of the spontaneous protests since Tuesday, after the war crimes tribunal announced ‘life-in-jail’ verdict for Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla for his role in the atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War.

Tens of thousands have joined the protest, spurred by messages flying across social networking sites or by word of mouth. Many, especially the young, have stayed on for six days now.

On Friday, an ultimatum was read out from Shahbagh demanding death for all war criminals of 1971 with a vow not to leave the roundabout until that is achieved.
Hannan Shah alleged that while Abul Kalam Azad was given death penalty , Abdul Quader Molla was given ‘life-in-jail’ on almost similar charges.

“That proves that the government is doctoring the verdicts by influencing the tribunals,” he said.

“The government’s dual policy becomes evident through these two verdicts.”

He questioned statements by leaders and ministers of the ruling coalition , some of whom have questioned the verdict on Molla .

“LGRD minister Syed Ashraful has even said all the accused will be hanged . If we say something about such verdicts, we face charges of contempt of court. But the ruling party leaders and ministers can get away saying anything they want,” Hannan Shah observed.

He said the BNP was not opposed to the war crimes trials.

"But if the Awami League is sincere about trying war criminals , it should bring to justice the identified 195 war criminals who were let off by the Mujib government," Shah said. "All those who supported the Pakistanis and are now part of the Awami League should also face the trials."

Shah alleged that members of the ruling party distributed biscuits and foodstuff among the protesters at Shahbagh.

He said that the people of Bangladesh will welcome the fall of the ruling government if that happens through the Shahbagh protests.

He said that not only did the Jamaat oppose Bangladesh's war for freedom, even the pro-Chinese parties were opposed to the Liberation War.

"These elements are all around Sheikh Hasina now. This proves what this government is all about," he alleged.

It doesn't matter who started it but the one who will be the most benefited by this is movement is awami league. In the midst of all the chaos people are forgetting about many failures of the government. BNP & Jamat are too busy focusing on the Shahbag movement which is also good for awami league.

good to see BNP supporting Jamaat through and through, this statement is assuring to BNP supporters.

BNP and Jamat should focus on caretaker issue and govenment failure. If next election held under awami league one way or another BNP will loose for sure .

.
Sadeq Hossain Khoka has already expressed solidarity with the movement. However, BNP would not dare speak against this movement because of two reasons. 1)It will result in a massive backlash politically and 2) BNP leaders mostly support this movement.

@ I fully agree that this is a govt sponsered protest drama just to hide her failures.

@ Historically from the very inception of Awami Leaque( Muslim Awami Leaque-1949) it had played a faul game. I still remember once Awami Leaque won the election of 1954 under the banner of United Front ( Jukto Front) under the leadership of A K Fuzlul Huq, he could not announce the full cabinet. He only announced yes only 2 Mininisters just after the election. Initially Sk Mujib was not taken in the Cabinet and Awami Leaque boycotted the aoth ceremony at Govt House. It continued for almost 45 days. Soon, Sk Mujib and others were taken in the Ministry but there was a big difference of political opinion between Awami Leaque and Krishak Proja Party. Finally in order to make quick fall of Provintial Govt of AK Fuzlul Huq Sk Mujib started a riot between Bengalis and Bihares at Adamjee where about 1000 people died. At that time at the centre directly or indirectly some how Awami Leaque was in power and probably Sharwardy at the centre was Law Minister ! Soon the popular Provincial Govt was dissolved. Even Sk Mujibur had an hand to kill their own speaker (Shahed Ali). Old and wise man whispers that it was Sk Mujib who intentionally threw a marbale paper weight on the head of the speaker !!!

@ During the 1965 war once Governer General Munem Khan called all the political leader of the then East Pakistan for the help, Sk Mujib silently suggested Munem Khan to revolt against Central Govt in that crical situation.

@ In 1968 once Ayub called for a round table meeting, Mujib at once declared his famous 6 points without discussing with the the other senior members of AL. Later on, once it was discussed at the party meeting, 15 out of 17 district commities at once resigned. After this meeting Mujib secretly called on his student leaders like Jalil, Tofail, Razzak, Rob etc and said, " You cannot expect any thing revolutionary from these old ex-Muslim Leaquers, I here by order you to take the leadership and campaign for 6 points throughout East Pakistan". Since then the leadership of AL came down upon the "Student Front". (more to continue)

Within this time many events are taking place completely unnoticed by us. One got arrested for Sagar-Runi murder case, plot is to stage Joj mia drama. Again, Mosharraf Hossain (if I'm not wrong on the name) the secretary got released. Also, probably Hallmark's guys also got released. People don't have time, they are running after the ear that has been grabbed by hawk :).

Let the "intellectuals" protest all they like :D

As I said: "It's up to the jury."

I do not know, I proposed a ban of Indian products for a few months to peacefully protest BSF killings, now the Auto-ignorance-filled-scumbags (AIFS, lol) Shabag mobs are demanding a ban for Deshi Products!!!

Really, both love and hatred make people blind!

1) The Shahbag gathering has been arranged by the Awami League with multifaceted nefarious agenda in mind.

2) One is to get a public endorsement from Shahbag Drama for a change of law in the Parliament that will enable the govt to appeal against a tribunal verdict, such as a life sentence.

3) The political agenda is to isolate BNP from Jamaat and Jamaat supporters. Note, BNP is not in a position to either support the Shahbag drama, or go against it. BNP has beeen placed within a "Fata Bansh."

4) Yet another AL agenda from the trials and Shahbag drama is to force Jamaat to negotiate with AL, so that

a) Jamaat leadership agree to a general election without a Caretaker Govt,

b) Some of the 2nd tier leaders participate in that election without a Jamaat flag, and are
allowed to win in some of the seats as agreed by the two parties,

c) AL, Jatiyo Party, Jamaat, Communist/Socialist parties, a few Islamic parties all join the
election that will be boycotted by BNP,

d) AL forms the govt, and Jatiyo Party, jamaat and others fill the opposition bench,

e) The trial procedes on throughout the year and even if the accused are found guilty and
sentenced to death, the President of the Republic commutes the death sentences to life
after the election.

Jamaat itself has also been placed in a tight position. If it trusts AL promise and joins election, it will lose all the credibility even if it chooses to join election without a banner. So, the best approach should be for Jamaat is to keep on doing the street fighting for the release of their leaders. I have read somewhere tomorrow they will show their strength, peaceful, at some points in Dhaka and other cities.
