Police say suspect was teased about English skills
AP | Apr 03,2012 | 22:20
OAKLAND, California — An expelled South Korean-born student who was upset about being teased for his English skills opened fire at random, killing at least seven at a small Christian university, police said Tuesday.

The suspect opened fire when he learned the female administrator he was looking for was not there, according to the police.

One L. Goh “went through the entire building systematically and randomly shooting victims,” forcing a secretary into a classroom and asking people to line up, Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan told a news conference.

“Not everyone was cooperative, and that’s when he began shooting,” Jordan said. The dead included six students and the secretary, he said.

Jordan said the 43-year-old had been expelled, possibly for behavioural problems, and was upset with school administrators and with several students because of the way he had been treated when enrolled two months ago.

“They disrespected him, laughed at him. They made fun of his lack of English speaking skills. It made him feel isolated compared to the other students,” Jordan said.

“We’ve learned that this was a very chaotic, calculated and determined gentleman that came there with a very specific intent to kill people, and that’s what his motive was and that’s what he carried out,” Jordan told ABC’s “Good Morning America”.

Five died at the scene and another two died at the hospital. The wounded victims were in stable condition, and at least one person had been released from the hospital. Jordan told “Good Morning America” the victims ranged in age from 21 to 40.

Dawinder Kaur’s family told the Oakland Tribune that she was being treated for a gunshot to her elbow.

The 19-year-old told her family that that the gunman was a student in her nursing class who had been absent for months before returning Monday. The gunman entered the classroom and ordered students to line up against the wall.

When he showed his gun, students began running and he opened fire, her family said.

Tashi Wangchuk, whose wife attended the school and witnessed the shooting, said he was told by police that the gunman first shot a woman at the front desk, then continued shooting randomly in classrooms.

Fanling monk is right upto certain extent about these insecurities, but the major hearburn is when they feel they are discriminated in the land of freedom.

Just a few days ago we had a Korean talking about Chinese in-confidence around foreigners. Guess who is in-confident.

The man lossed his brother recently in a vehicular accident, he was suffering also from debt, and then was expelled from the univerisity due to behavioral problems. I would assume, from reading reports, that this man had an underlying psychopathology, either acute psychotic episode or some kind of violent psychosis triggered by the self-perceived insult of expulsion. His actions were wrong, and the way he handled the situation was wrong. The fact that he reacted calmly when he gave himself up to law enforcement indicates some kind of behavioral pathology. A proper diagnosis would require a greater psychiatric evaluation.

Condolences to those affected. Truly an unfortunate occurrence.
