Serbia get better of Brazil in second attempt, reach Semis

MADRID (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Serbia knocked off Brazil the second time around at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, winning their Quarter-Final match-up 84-56 to secure their fourth top-four finish at FIBA's flagship event in the last five tournaments.

Milos Teodosic led the way for the Europeans, who won the FIBA World Championship as Yugoslavia in 1998 and 2002, with 23 points while Bogdan Bogdanovic had a dozen and the big man pair of Miroslav Raduljica and Nenad Krstic had 10 apiece.

Serbia, who lost to Brazil 81-73 during group play, will take on the winner of the second Quarter-Final in Madrid between France and hosts Spain in Friday's Semi-Final.

Wild card recipient Brazil once again missed out on reaching the top four at the tournament - their seventh straight failed attempt.

Anderson Varejao and Marquinhos Vieira were the only players to score in double digits for Ruben Magnano's team, finishing with 12 points each.

Teodosic had a strong start for the Europeans with eight points in the first six minutes as they took a 14-9 lead. Brazil got to within one point, but Serbia would not give up the lead and were up 21-17 after 10 minutes.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Alex Garcia edged Brazil in front 23-21 but Teodosic answered right back and the Serbs would push the advantage to 29-23. Serbia struggled to contain Nene Hilario, who spurred a 9-0 run that had Brazil up 32-29. But the Europeans punched right back with eight straight points for a 37-32 halftime lead.

Serbia came out of the break strong and the game was essentially decided with about seven minutes left in the third when both Tiago Splitter and Nene were hit with technicals after a foul, resulting in five made free-throws and then a Stefan Markovic lay-up for a seven-point possession.

Bogdanovic nailed a three-pointer to push the advantage to 53-36. It extended out to 66-44 after three quarters.

Brazil could only get to within 23 points in the fourth quarter.

All-Euroleague First and Second Teams announced

Three Serbian players are in the first five, and Bogdan Bogdanovic won the Rising star trophy

One week before the decisive games of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague season tip off at the Final Four in Madrid, Euroleague Basketball congratulates the 10 stars who have earned selection to the 2014-15 All-Euroleague First and Second Teams. The selection process for the All-Euroleague teams and the 2015 bwin MVP saw tens of thousands of fans from around the globe cast votes for their favorite players, as did media members from each of the countries with Euroleague teams. The voting is made without regard to player positions. The 10 players chosen come from seven different Euroleague teams. Six of them are first-time All-Euroleague selections. The All-Euroleague First Team is comprised of players from five different teams: guards Vassilis Spanoulis of Olympiacos Piraeus and Milos Teodosic of CSKA Moscow; forwards Nemanja Bjelica of Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul and Felipe Reyes of Real Madrid; and center Boban Marjanovic of Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade. The All-Euroleague Second Team features Nando De Colo of CSKA, Andrew Goudelock of Fenerbahce, Rudy Fernandez of Madrid, Devin Smith of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and Ante Tomic of FC Barcelona. Spanoulis has now been named to one of the All-Euroleague teams for the fifth season in a row and seventh time overall, which ties him with scoring king Juan Carlos Navarro of FC Barcelona for the most selections in competition history. Teodosic is selected to his fourth All-Euroleague team, while Fernandez and Tomic are each honored for the third time.

ALL-EUROLEAGUE FIRST TEAM
Vassilis Spanoulis, Olympiacos Piraeus
A three-time Euroleague champion and three-time Final Four MVP, Spanoulis is now an All-Euroleague First-Team choice for the third time in the past four seasons. In both of those previous instances, he went on to lead Olympiacos to the title. Spanoulis shined early this season with a career-best scoring effort – 34 points – in an overtime road win against Neptunas Klaipeda, after which he ws named bwin MVP for October. Spanoulis finished as his team’s leader in playing time (28 mpg.), scoring (14.9 ppg.), assists (5.7 apg.), fouls drawn (5.8 per game) and performance index rating (15.5 per game). He led the 2014-15 Euroleague in fouls drawn, ranked seventh in both scoring and assists and was 13th in average index rating. Spanoulis was the Euroleague MVP for the 2011-12 season.

Milos Teodosic, CSKA Moscow
Despite coming off the bench most of the season, Milos Teodosic played some of his best basketball ever in leading CSKA Moscow to a competition-best 25-3 record with 7.1 assists per game, the second-highest average in Euroleague history. He also ranked first in three-pointers made, with 69, and heads to the Final four within striking distance of the Euroleague single-season record of 74. Teodosic ranked fourth in scoring (15 ppg.) and ninth in performance index rating (16.6 per game). He also set a Top 16 single-game assists record of 14 that was subsequently broken. Teodosic posted career-high numbers in scoring, rebounding (2.8 rpg.) and assists. This is the second All-Euroleague First Team selection for Teodosic, who was also the 2009-10 Euroleague MVP.

Nemanja Bjelica, Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
Nemanja Bjelica's tremendous all-around basketball skills were evident all season long as he led Fenerbahce to its first Final Four. Bjelica was seemingly everywhere while leading Fenerbahce in performance index rating (18.3 per game), rebounding (8.6 rpg.) and steals (1.2 spg.). He was also second on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg.), blocks (0.7 bpg.) and fouls drawn (3.2 per game). Bjelica led all Euroleague players in defensive rebounds (180) and ranked second in index rating (494) and total rebounds (231). He posted career high numbers in points, rebounds, steals and blocks, and posted the rebounding average in the playoffs (11 rpg.) in 14 years. Bjelica, who was bwin MVP for March, makes his first All-Euroleague appearance in his fifth season in the competition.

Felipe Reyes, Real Madrid
Some players age like fine wine and Felipe Reyes of Real Madrid is definitely one of them. At age 35, Reyes played less than 20 minutes per game this season, but it was enough to average 11.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and a performance index rating of 14.5. On a per-minute basis, his stats show that Reyes was dominant. He ranked first in offensive rebounds per 40 minutes (5.4), third in index rating (29.9) and fouls drawn (8.6), fifth in scoring (23.4), sixth in two-pointers made (7.8) and 10th in rebounds (11.2). Reyes also became the competition's all-time leader in total rebounds midway through the season. His go-ahead triple late in Game 2 of the playoffs proved that he keeps adding to his game late in a stellar career that now includes the distinction of his first All-Euroleague selection.

Boban Marjanovic, Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade
More than just a dominant force, center Boban Marjanovic produced a record-breaking season in leading Crvena Zvezda to new Euroleague heights. The Euroleague's tallest player at 2.20 meters, Marjanovic set new Euroleague marks for the most rebounds (256) and double-doubles (16) in a season. His 25.7 performance index rating average was the competition's highest in 10 years, as were his 10.7 rebounds. Marjanovic was the Euroleague's runner-up in scoring with 16.6 points in 24 games. He earned weekly MVP honors three times and posted six of this season's top 20 performances based on index rating. Marjanovic also ranked fourth in fouls drawn (4.6) and free throws made (4.2). He scored in double digits in 23 of 24 games. This is his first All-Euroleague selection.

Euroleague Rising Star Trophy: Bogdan Bogdanovic, Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul

His unique combination of basketball skills and scoring ability together with maturity and poise have led Turkish Airlines Euroleague head coaches to vote Bogdan Bogdanovic of Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul as the Euroleague Rising Star Trophy winner for the second season in a row. The Rising Star Trophy recognizes the best Euroleague player each season who was under the age of 22 on July 1 of the summer before the season started. No Fenerbahce player started more games than the 22-year-old Bogdanovic and only one played more minutes than the savvy guard, whose 289 points scored led all Rising Star Trophy-eligible players this season. Having won the award also last season, when he played for Partizan NIS Belgrade, Bogdanovic joins Nikola Mirotic, who did so in 2011 and 2012 with Real Madrid, as the only players to win the Rising Star Trophy twice. Bogdanovic is also the first Fenerbahce player to win the award.

He was followed in the head coaches' voting by Anadolu Efes Istanbul teammates Dario Saric and Cedi Osman, by Mario Hezonja of FC Barcelona and by Alessandro Gentile of EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. The Rising Star Trophy is one of several end-of-season honors awarded by Euroleague Basketball. Earlier in the week, Nizhny Novgorod guard Taylor Rochestie was announced as the recipient of the 2014-15 Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy and Olympiacos Piraeus big man Bryant Dunston was voted by the head coaches as the 2014-15 Best Defender Trophy winner. Still to be revealed are the All-Euroleague honorees. The bwin MVP award will be announced at the EFES Euroleague Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 14 during the Final Four in Madrid. The Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year Trophy and the Euroleague Club Executive of the Year are post-season awards.

Playing for a team competing for such lofty goals, Bogdanovic sacrificed individual statistics for the betterment of the team, but was still able to step up when needed. Bogdanovic won his first bwin MVP of the week honor after Top 16 Round 11 when he torched EA7 Emporio Armani Milan for 25 points, 4 assists and 2 steals and a performance index rating of 32 in a 98-77 victory that clinched Fenerbahce’s first playoff berth since 2008. In addition to leading Fenerbahce in games started (25), he was second in minutes (27:50), assists (2.7 apg.) and three-pointers made (46) and third in free-throw shooting (78.2%) and defensive rebounding (2.4 drpg.). He was also among the top three in scoring (10.7 ppg., third), three-pointers made (second), assists (first), steals (0.8 spg., second) and fouls drawn (2.5, third) among all Rising Star Trophy-eligible players this season.

With Fenerbahce, Bogdanovic was asked to play a more diverse role and responded by leading or tying for the team lead in assists in half of the team's regular season games. Not coincidentally, Fenerbahce won all of those games. When Nikos Zisis arrived to fill the playmaker role, Bogdanovic focused more on scoring; he scored in double figures in 10 and made multiple three-pointers in nine of Fenerbahce’s Top 16 games. And in the playoffs series against defending champion Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, Bogdanovic made every play count. His key three-pointer in the third quarter started Fenerbahce’s rally back from an 11-point deficit to win Game 1. He set the tone in Game 2 by scoring three-pointers for Fenerbahce’s first points of each half en route to a comfortable 15-point win. And in a Game 3 overtime win to sweep the series, Bogdanovic corralled the final rebound with his team up 1 to seal the victory and a place in Madrid. Whether based on numbers or his contributions to Fenerbahce’s first trip to the Final Four, Bogdanovic stood out all season long and is a worthy repeat recipient of the Rising Star Trophy.

The list of former Euroleague Rising Star Trophy winners includes Erazem Lorbek, who won the inaugural Rising Star trophy in 2005 with Climamio Bologna and was followed by Andrea Bargnani with Benetton Treviso in 2006. Rudy Fernandez, now with Real Madrid, collected the trophy in 2007 with DKV Joventut, before Danilo Gallinari of Armani Jeans Milano won the award in 2008. Novica Velickovic of Partizan Belgrade was the 2009 winner, and the following year it was Ricky Rubio of FC Barcelona. Kostas Papanikolaou of Olympiacos Piraeus won the Rising Star Trophy in 2013.

Bogdanovic has a chance to follow in the footsteps of Rubio and Papanikolaou, who each helped their team to the Euroleague title in the season they won the Rising Star Trophy. The Rising Star Trophy will be formally presented to Bogdanovic at the EFES Euroleague Awards Ceremony portion of the 2015 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four Madrid Tip-Off Event on Thursday, May 14 at Casa de Correos.
