ISLAMABAD: Serbia has sought Pakistan’s help to get an observer status in the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

“We have applied for an observer status in the OIC where Pakistan is an influential member. We are hoping that soon we will get an observer status,” Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said here on Thursday.

Mr Jeremic is the first Serbian foreign minister to visit Pakistan since independence of the country after break-up of Yugoslavia.

During his day-long visit, he called on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

The Serbian minister praised Pakistan’s refusal to recognise Kosovo as an independent state.

In an interview with Dawn, Mr Jeremic said the International Court of Justice was expected to give its ruling on Kosvo’s secession in a few months. “As a result of our diplomatic efforts, two thirds of the world’s nations, including Pakistan, have not recognised the succession.

“We are grateful for this solidarity and support and we are now making history,” he said.

He said his country had the support of Russia, China, Britain, Brazil, Egypt and other countries on the Kosovo issue. “We have a firm stance on Kosovo. We are also firm that it is peacefully seen through, not through any confrontation.”

He said Serbia expected to sign several agreements with Pakistan, especially in the fields of trade, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, hydroelectric power, construction and defence.

“We will close the discussion on a number of bilateral agreements that will facilitate economic and cultural relations between our two countries.”

He said Serbia had decided to set up a scholarship fund for students from non-aligned countries, including Pakistan.

Strange, I thought Pakistan was supporting the kosovian cause. May be I am wrong, but this seams not in line with the conventional style of Pakistan's foreign affairs dealings.

In February 2008, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry released the following statement: "We understand and support the legitimate aspirations of the Kosovars and the need for peace in Kosovo and the region. Pakistan is watching the developments in Kosovo carefully. We have noted the recognition extended by a number of important countries to the declaration of independence by the Kosovo Parliament and the statement made by the OIC Secretary General expressing happiness over this development, and solidarity and support with the Kosovars. Our policy will be guided by these developments and the aspirations of the people of Kosovo. It remains our earnest desire that situation remains calm and peaceful in Kosovo and the region."

At a meeting on 28 January 2009 between the Kosovan Foreign Minister, Skënder Hyseni, and Mr. Shahbaz, Pakistan's Ambassador to Austria, the ambassador said that the people and government of Pakistan support Kosovo on its path. He said that Pakistan is conducting intensive talks with its neighbours and other members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference on the issue, and that it is just a matter of time before Pakistan takes the decision to recognise Kosovo.

At a meeting on 26 May 2009 between the Kosovan Foreign Minister, Skënder Hyseni, and Abdullah Hussain Haroon, the representative of Pakistan to the UN, Mr. Haroon reportedly said "finally we support your cause"

Why has the PPP government taken a U-turn on this issue:disagree::disagree: it just does not make sense:disagree: mazloom ko choohar kar zalim ka sath day rahay hain :disagree:
Serbians are not that influential to harm us in International Arena in any way,, then why??? Nor can we have some very beneficial relations with them, which can stand critical for our defense and economic needs.

I am not a promoter of anti-Serbian sentiments, but this Sudden U-turn in foreign policy by the current government for no justifiable reasons deeply sad-ens me. If we don't want to hurt the Serbians and the Kosovians, we should act as a mediator to help them reach a solution. Even if that is not possible, then we should zip our mouths and stay neutral.

I wounder how much it would have hurt an ordinary Kosovian, how low will they be thinking of Pakistan and Pakistanis. They looked up to us, as someone is their to raise their voice for them and support them at least morally, if otherwise was not possible. Indeed its a moment of shame for us, only if a bit of morality is left in us.

God bless Kosovo and its people.

The Kosovars won their independence after so much sacrifice.

Shame on Pakistan and the corrupt PPP. It seems everything in Pakistan government is for sale, including morals.

Kudos to pakistan, they have won praise from Serbia!!! Wow. What happened to the cause of kosovo where even members of the LeT had backed?

Pakistan can't be in worst hands... it's one man show here.
Serbians are close to indians and this move is to make indians happy.
RAW employ many hateful Serbians.... spreading all over the balkans and out.

Care to post something to back it up? Did PA send any mercenaries? You are certainly not referring to the Pakistani contingent in the UNPKF, are you?

Correct me if i am wrong, but i am sure Pakistan was backing the Bosnian Muslims.

My Uncle has served in boznia for five years and he told me how PA played an important role on multiple fronts.

Btw look for how baktar shikans were smuggled to Bosnia by ISI.

Pakistani help for kosovo is also an open secret and i am angry to hear this news.

Kosova say kya humari dushmani hain? This government of Pakistan is very strange indeed.

.
not recognising Kosove is just like recognising Israel for us pakistani muslims. serbs have very good F.relations with israel too. and another thing that a bit strange to me is that pakistan is among in those group of countries including Eygpt those dont want to see kosove as a country or which are more closeer to serbia. I want my govt. to recognise kosove ASAP! its the third muslim country in europe. :smitten:
