Serb Local Councilman Shot Dead in N. Kosovo

Kosovo's government has condemned the killing of a local Serb councilman in an ethnically divided town in the country's north.

Unknown gunmen shot dead Dmitrije Janicijevic early Thursday in Mitrovica, which has seen rising tensions between ethnic Albanians and Serbs.

Janicijevic held a seat on Mitrovica's local council from the Independent Liberal Party, an ethnic Serbian party that is part of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian-dominated coalition government.

Kosovo's government called Janicijevic's murder "a direct attack against the will of the people of Mitrovica north and against the establishment of the rule of law and the legitimate institutions in that part of the territory of Kosovo."

Janicijevic unsuccessfully ran for mayor of the ethnic Serb northern part of Mitrovica last November, in an election marred by violence and a low voter turnout.

Earlier this week, the results of that election were annulled and a new vote set for next month, after the Serb winner refused to swear allegiance to the Kosovo's ethnic Albanian authorities.

Serb nationalists in Kosovo had campaigned for a boycott of last November's elections in the northern part of the country, with some saying that voting would be an act of treason.

Many of the 40,000 ethnic Serbs living in northern Kosovo have refused to recognize the ethnic Albanian majority's 2008 secession from Serbia.

More than a thousand of Serbs are killed since the end of the war in 1999, and practically nobody was ever sentenced for anything. So this is pretty much normal in Kosovo. Even now as you can see they are periodically killing Serbs, in order to intimidate them, and make them leave Kosovo.

Well i don't claim that we didn't committed any crimes in that war, but since the end of the war we didn't kill a single Albanian in Serbia, and there is over 50 000 of them here. They are living normally, nobody is attacking them... they have the same rights as everybody else. But on Kosovo they are even destroying our cemeteries and churches, so they could erase all evidence of Serbian existence in that area. But they have won the propaganda war, and they have the support of the western states, so we can't do a shit about it.

And i guess you know what we did in Bosnia? You have probably watched some kind of documentary movie, and now you're some kind of an expert? I don't deny that we committed war crimes in Bosnia, but so did Muslims, and so did Croats. It's not black and white world.

But if someday someone kills some innocent member of your family, we can always say: "**** you, you know what some other people from your country did?"

That is not solution to any kind of a problem. We can't get Kosovo back with force, and even if we could, what should we do with 1.6 million of Albanians? I expected at least that we should get the northern part where Serbs are majority. But guess what Albanians have right to declare that they don't wish to live in Serbia, but Serbs don't have the right to declare, that they wish to stay inside Serbia. Hypocrisy of western world is on such amazing level.

Now i can only hope that someone will protect Serbian people, cultural heritage, and private property on Kosovo, because we are not allowed to do so ourselves.

But then again it looks that even that is too much to ask for. Around 150 serbian monasteries and churches are destroyed on Kosovo. Some of those were centuries old. Except in the northern part, there are no Serbian cemeteries that are not destroyed. They are forging documents and selling property of the Serbs, and Serbian companies. And nobody gives a shit, and that's the reality.

West weakens. Kosovo will soon lose its patrons. Then maybe negotiations will be possible.

@vostok We cant deal with Albanians by force,not in our dreams.They have 1.5 million citizens,if we take back Kosovo in few years our PM should be albanian....and what next?

Most important goals of Serbian people:
1)High fertility rate(primary).
2)Than economic/military/energetic revitalization.

When you are strong,you dont have nightmares like Kosovo question.
