Pakistan needs sweeping constitutional amendments to ensure equality of citizens regardless of their faith or sect
Source: The Nation

By Muntazir Sherazi, who enjoys classic rock and politics. Often at the same time

“You are free; you are free to go to your temples. You are free to go to your mosques or to any other places of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion, caste or creed—that has nothing to do with the business of the state.”

– Muhammad Ali Jinnah

The prophetic words by the founder of our nation clearly show what he conceived the state of Pakistan as. But looking back on our history, we can clearly see that we’re way past that.

The struggle for the recognition of Ahmadis as Muslims is a lost cause. An average Pakistani has been so brainwashed that he will never accept them as such and crimes against/persecution of Ahmadis won’t stop under the current Constitution.

Christians and Hindus are similarly marginalised, with many of Pakistani Hindus going to India and India accepting them with open arms. We know about the kidnapping and forced conversions of Hindu girls to Islam. We are similarly aware of the attacks on churches and the failure of the government to provide them with security. We are callous.

There should be sweeping constitutional amendments which declare all Pakistanis as equal citizens, regardless of their faith or sect. When your law says that a non-Muslim cannot be a president or prime minister of your country, you’re already promoting discrimination in the society and inoculating the idea that religion can be used to persecute people and to discriminate against them.

This very ideology has pushed the Pakistani society towards religious extremism and the alienation of Pakistani minorities will lead to more violent outbursts by the bearded men.

Simply put, you don’t have to agree that Ahmadis are Muslims. But this idea that Ahmadis are a subhuman species and should be persecuted accordingly is inhumane. With laws that put Ahmadi publishers of the Quran in jail, we can safely say that Zia’s Islami nizam has only divided our society on the basis of sectarianism.

In the presence of religious extremism , religion and state should be separated. Where so called religious leader convert the masses into mob and take the justice in there hand.
When religious scholars seal their lips due to death threats.

The world is lurching to the right, with right wing leaders and populist parties spring up

Liberalism is dying and even the west is rejecting it

So if the west is rejecting it, then why should Pakistan embrace it

We need to embrace our own right wing and enforce the will of the majority with the minorities sucking it up like whats happening in the rest of the world

can anyone here tell me how many true muslims he/ she knows in pakistan. i have come across less then 10 such people in my entire life. majority of the people i know here are so called muslims , secularists and extremists but very very few true muslims.
remember for a true muslim islam is the final answer to all problems and if you are a so called muslim then you are doomed whether you declare islam as a state religion or separate islam from state. it wont make any difference . and such "muslims" should also be ready for worse grading then non muslims in the next world .
and if someone wants the definition of true muslim here is how i define true muslim "a person who knows islam and who lives islam" now apply this definition upon yourself and you will get the answer. keep the answer to yourself and at least dont lie to yourself.

Run the state according to Islam and minorities will have full protection anyways.

What Jinnah said is according to Islam. People are free to practice their religion peacefully in a Muslim state with Islamic laws.

Secularism does not kill people

Islamism does

No ... sects/division does!!

Gulags, holocaust, Ukrainian famines, Bangal famine , Algerian genocide, butchery of Vietnam, Bosnian genocide, ethnic cleansing in Africa, Australia, Canada, US, Iraq war were all perpetuated by champions of Secularism. You choose to overlook history to fuel your desi surkha conspiracy theories. The facts though, remain facts.

What's your view of a 'true muslim'? Is the same view of your brother, father, mother, uncle, etc?
