* Urges international community, UN to safeguard human rights of Palestinians
* Senators ask govt to take notice of situation in Swat

By Zulfiqar Ghuman

ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Friday passed a unanimous resolution condemning the Israeli aggression in Gaza and urged the international community, particularly the United Nations (UN) to safeguard the human rights of the Palestinian people.

The Senate criticised the international community including major powers such as the United States and the Arab and the Islamic world for their inability to take effective political, moral and legal steps to stop Israeli aggression in accordance with the UN Charter.

The resolution reaffirmed solidarity with the people of Palestine and extended support to them for their fight to establish an independent State with Ul-Quds Sharif as its capital.

Leader of the House Raza Rabbani, who is also the federal minister for inter-provincial coordination, moved the resolution.

It said Israel’s targeting the civilian population, including women and children, amounted to committing acts that fell in the purview of international conventions against genocide.

It reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to support the Palestinian cause, the total withdrawal of Israeli forces from the occupied Arab territories including Jerusalem, restitution of inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to establish an independent homeland, and the refugee’s right of return.

The Senate also reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to continue to support the Palestinian people in their struggle for self-determination. The House urged the government to pursue the matter in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and provide humanitarian and medical assistance to the victims.

Expressing their feelings over the unanimous resolution, the lawmakers termed the Israeli aggression as state terrorism carried out at the behest of the US and lambasted the Islamic world, especially the Arab League, for ‘their criminal silence’.

The senators were of the opinion that peace could not be restored in the world without resolving the issues of Palestine and Kashmir. They said until and unless the UN and resolutions regarding the Muslim world were not implemented, peace would remain a dream.

They also urged the OIC to take advantage of the change of guards in the US and play an effective role for the resolution of issues confronting the Muslim world.

Swat: They also asked the government to take notice of the situation in Swat, adding if not controlled, it could spread to other parts of the country including Punjab.

Earlier, Law Minister Farooq Naik lay three ordinances before the Senate, which included the National Vocational and Technical Education Commission Ordinance, the Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils (Amendment) Ordinance, and the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Ordinance 2008.

Inter-Provincial Coordination Minister Raza Rabbani assured the House that the coalition government would least depend on the promulgation of the ordinances. “However, if deemed necessary, the government would present the ordinance before parliament within four months of its promulgation,” he added.

Senator Nisar Memon presented the Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production’s report on the committee’s visit to the United Kingdom and Belgium last November.

Senator Tahir Mashhadi presented a report of the Committee on Rules of Procedure on the privilege motion moved by Senator Liaquat Ali Bangulzai on the alleged misbehaviour of a government officer.

Senator Saadia Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz said if the textile industry were not rescued from the current situation, it would result in unemployment and a loss of billions of dollars in the foreign exchange.

Later, the senators raised problems of their respective areas.
