Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday (28 October) said that it was wrong to consider Bangladesh a burden.

While addressing the passing out ceremony of the 48th Specialized Course of Police Service in Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif advised all to learn from past mistakes, reported Minute Mirror.

He said, "The idea of abandoning Bangladesh was wrong, it should not have been separated from Pakistan. I am cautiously saying this because at the time the idea was that it is a burden, so take it off."

Shahbaz also noted that today Bangladesh is way ahead of Pakistan and their exports are more than that of Pakistan.

Speaking about seeking foreign aid, the Pak PM said, "We don't lack anything; I wish we didn't have to go to someone and ask."

"We have to live in this world, we cannot go everywhere asking for money, this is not politics or service, we need to learn from our mistakes and look ahead."

Does he make up "facts" like these? I have not heard of this story. Exactly who did the "Seeing", "Considering" and "Abandoning" he talks about? And how does he wish "should not have been separated" would have happened?

The constitutional roadblocks of the first republic were ill equipped to deal with fighting poverty as the first republic had sole purpose of ensuring survival. I thank the Pakistani PM for saying positive things about Bangladesh.

But, it is not only today's Bangladesh exporting more than Pakistan. Even before 1971, it was east Pakistan that was exporting more than west Pakistan.

Jute was the main export item in those days. The market almost evaporated in the mid-70s when plastic products came to the market for use more in quantity and jute lost its glitters.

But, BD replaced jute with garments that glitter.

This should not be in the BD section.

Retrospection in PK better belongs in PK section.

The union of two muslim parts of the subcontinent was a good thing and the concept rightly has and will continue to have sympathy in BD as the concept of muslim sovereignty was born here in Dhaka and was realised here as bengal was the only place that muslim league held political power.

But with hindsight there is no conceivable way any BD could conclude the union should have continued with BD being second class citizen in their own country continiously subsidising the wests development at the expense of the East.
