Security beefed up in twin capitals of India-controlled Kashmir - People's Daily Online Jan 26 2010
Indian police and paramilitary troopers in India-controlled Kashmir beefed up security apparatus and sounded caution Monday, a day ahead of Indian Republic Day, to foil attempts by suspected militants to disrupt official celebrations, police said.
Police and paramilitary troopers personnel deployed on the roads were checking vehicles, frisking pedestrians in Srinagar and Jammu, the twin capitals of India-controlled Kashmir.
The policemen carrying metal detectors had also pressed in sniffer dogs to check vehicles for explosives. "Security has been tightened in the region particularly in cities of Srinagar and Jammu to ensure peaceful celebrations," said a police official posted here.
The security agencies have also cordoned the Bakhshi Stadium, the main venue for Jan. 26 function in Srinagar.
The multi-tier security system has been put in place with sharp shooters taking positions atop houses adjacent to the stadium to thwart any militant attack.
The roads leading to Bakshi Stadium have been sealed completely. The barricades and concertina wires have been placed on the roads to restrict movement of people and vehicles.
Bullet proof bunkers were also parked in the middle of the road to sabotage any attack.
The security agencies have activated all the installed Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTVs) in Srinagar to monitor the movement of people especially the militants.
Owing to unprecedented security measures, Monday afternoon saw less movement of people on Srinagar roads.
Likewise unprecedented security arrangements have been made in Jammu. Police and paramilitary troopers have cordoned the Moulana Azad Memorial Stadium- the main venue for Jan. 26 function in Jammu.
