What's new

Second indigenous carrier a long way off: Navy Chief

We need one CBG patrolling our west coast in the Arabian sea , and at least 2 CBG's on our eastern side ...one for the defense of our peninsula , in the Bay of Bengal....The other as a patrol and an escort to our merchant ships keeping our energy lines open in case of a conflict and also for offensive purposes , to block the energy lines of an adversary.Till we induct IAC 2 ....we wont be able to effectively project power in IOR . So any intention of someday taking up a greater responsibility of protecting International Maritime order , shoulder to shoulder with the USN ...will have to wait for a long time ....

.
"Greater funding priorities"? Really? I think the top priority of our defence should be the Navy.

. .
I'll be very happy if IAC-II starts by 2020..Our priority should be induction of Submarines and Anti-Submarine planes and ships in Numbers..
AC will be a sitting duck if it doesnot have enough supporting ships with it..
I agree with you....but @ xataxsata is right, we will here about IAC2 in 2012 in the next 5 year plan....i think by 2020 it will be ready unless our shipyards does not cause delays.....

I just hope we finish all the arihant class SSBN and a couple SSN by 2020 and a couple of indigenous SSK (out of 12) along-with 6 P75 and 6 P75I and 12 P28 and P28A ASW Corvette will definitely help to strengthen our Submarine and anti-submarine capabilities....

Hey guys is there any report about the SSN which are proposed ?/

.
please no more carriers...just 4 r enough....need to concentrate on highly stealthy nuke subs in large numbers

.
Two Aircraft Carriers Are Under Construction [Vikramaditya and Vikrant class IAC 1] - Commisioning By 2014.

Order for 2nd 'Vikrant Class Carrier' will be Given soon Just After IAC 1 Is done , Hopefully It will be Commisioned By 2020.
I dont Think IAC 2 Will Be Nuclear Powered , It Will Be Conventional Powered With CATOBAR Layout.

I remember Air Chief said There are Plans for Total 5 carriers - That Means There will be 2 More Carriers [IAC 3 And 4] Hopefully They will be Nuclear Powered Super-Carriers.

.
Look at it strategically. IF an AC was hit by the new new Chinese ballistic missile specifically designed to take out AC's then it means the lives of almost 3,000- 5,000 ppl die as the ship explodes and sinks. A huge waste or resources. Subs are more effective in a variety of ways.

Hey guys is there any report about the SSN which are proposed ?/

According To a Source , The Design Work On SSN is already Started and They will be based On Russian Akula 2 SSN Which we have Leased. The Indian Navy Personnel are Currently Being Trained On Akula 2.

Government has Cleared Plans For Total 6 SSBN - Ins Arihant is under sea Trials and 2 Arihant Class SSBN are Under Construction. There Are 3 More to be Build after Completion Of 2 under construction.

There are Plans For Total 9 SSN - which will Provide Escort to SSBN - design work already Started and Will be based On Akula 2 Like i said b4.

I dont Think this Whole Program will be made Totally Public Bcoz of Security Concerns , Just Like The 'Arihant'.

.
I also heard that SSN will be based on Akulla 2 but are you sure the design work has already started ??/ If yes then its good and i hope atleast 2 can be build by 2020....

I asked this question in other thread also.....

This was a pic from Defence expo 2010....

6TH_DEFENCE_EXPO_31990f.jpg

Is this the model of Project 17a or Project 15b or from some other foreign company??

Anybody who went to see defence expo 2010 must have seen this model.....

In the near future. The USN will maintain the peace in the Indian ocean.

Guys,u need to stop getting excited over every statement made by arm forces

It is true that navy has other funding priorities over A/C
And it is unlikely that navy will face a conflict where it Is required to field 2 A/C simultaneously , in the coming 10 yrs
As per the capital acquisition plan of armforces between yr 2007-2022 GOI allocated 150 billion $ out of which 60 billion $ were meant for navy
Now naval capital acquisition which are to be funded from this Amount include the following

7 P17A frigates @ 9 billion $
4 P15b Destroyers @ 7 billion $
6 P75i Submarines @ 11 billion $
8 Minehunters @ 2 billion $
14 Landing crafts @ 1 billion $

4 LHD/LPD @ 4 billion $
8 P28A corvettes @ 2 billion $
5 O

.
5 offshore patrol vessel @ 1 billion $
1 Aircraft carrier @ 2.5 billion $
4 SSN @ 7-10 billion $
And these are just combat ships that require funding
Navy will also spend 2 billion $ on various auxiliary ships
Another 12-15 billion $ have to be spend on aircrafts for naval aviation

These include
Upto 56 LUH
Upto 60 ASW Helis
4 additional P8I
Upto 10 medium maritime patrol and ASW aircraft
4 AEWC aircrafts
40-50 NMRCA

.
GOI has only released 50 billion for aquisition till 2014
Out of which share of navy is only 20 billion $
So u guys can bet that navy chief would like to allocate funds to areas which are of critical importance

PS- in my report I have only counted projects which were approved after 2007
many of the ships currently under construction and aircrafts being acquired were approved and funded between 1997-2007 and have not been undertaken for consideration

Also to be noted is that while surface ships aquisition will be completed by yr 2022, but submarine projects like SSN and P75I will be completed by 2027

.
The members here are being totally unreasonable in pointing our requirements of aircraft carriers.

i dont look too far in future.

in my opinion we require 04 aircraft carriers along with support ships. we need to prepare ourselves accordingly.

in my opinion, we have to concentrate more on submarine front. pakistan is catching up fast and we have to maintain our superiority.

so i suggest we purchase submarines to meet our short term immidiate requirement with respect to pakistan. we should continue to work towards aircraft carriers for long term strategic perspective.
