Search Underway for Missing Bering Air Plane with 10 Onboard in Alaska
A search is underway in Alaska for a Bering Air Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX that went missing on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The aircraft, carrying nine passengers and a pilot, was en route from Unalakleet to Nome.

Key Details:

Flight Information:
Bering Air Flight 445 departed from Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. local time. The aircraft lost radar contact and radio communication at approximately 3:20 p.m., roughly 10 minutes before its expected arrival in Nome.
Last Known Location: The aircraft was last traced over the Norton Sound area of the Bering Sea. Its last position was received by FlightRadar24 trackers 38 minutes after departing Unalakleet while flying over water. The aircraft was 12 miles (about 19 kilometers) offshore, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Search Efforts: Search teams, including the Coast Guard, National Guard, and Alaska State Troopers, are involved in the search. A Coast Guard C-130 aircraft has been deployed to scan the area. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is providing flight support.
Ground Search: The Nome Volunteer Fire Department is conducting a ground search from Nome and White Mountain.
Weather Conditions: Poor weather conditions and limited visibility are hampering aerial search efforts. An FAA weather camera near Nome showed near-whiteout conditions.
Safety Warning: Due to dangerous weather conditions, the public has been urged not to form independent search parties.
Statements: Alaska State Troopers reported the aircraft overdue at 4:00 p.m. Bering Air's operations director, David Olson, stated that staff were working hard to gather details and coordinate emergency assistance.

Communities Involved:

Nome:
The destination of the flight, a city just south of the Arctic Circle known as the ending point of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Unalakleet: The origin of the flight, a community of about 690 people in western Alaska.
White Mountain: The Nome Volunteer Fire Department is conducting a ground search from Nome and White Mountain.
