BEIJING – Pakistan and China will conduct a joint naval exercise off Shanghai in mid-July, People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy spokesperson Liu Wensheng announced on Sunday.

The exercise -- codenamed "Sea Guardians-2" -- is aimed at "jointly confronting naval security challenges" and seeks to enhance defense cooperation between both the allied countries.

It will also promote an all-weather strategic partnership, Liu said, adding that the drills were scheduled according to an existing annual plan and do not target any specific third parties.

Pakistan Navy is yet to make an official statement about the upcoming drills.

All-weather friends China and Pakistan on Sunday kicked off their 'Sea Guardians-2' drills off the Shanghai coast by deploying their new high-tech naval ships and fighter jets to "jointly deal with maritime security threats," as their navies stepped up cooperation in India's backyard, the Indian Ocean.

This is the second time China and Pakistan have held a “Sea Guardians” joint maritime exercise. The first was held in January 2020 in the northern Arabian Sea

The Pakistan Navy sent the PNS Taimur – the second of four powerful Type 054A/P frigates built by China – to take part in the exercise. The ship was delivered to the Pakistan Navy in Shanghai on June 23. The first of the frigates, the PNS Tughril, joined the Pakistan Navy fleet in January.

The Chinese vessels and aircraft taking part in the exercise are mainly from the PLA Eastern Theatre Command. They include the guided-missile frigates Xiangtan and Shuozhou, supply ship Qiandaohu, a submarine, an early warning aircraft, two fighter jets and one helicopter.

The drills will focus on attacking maritime targets, tactical manoeuvres, anti-submarine operations, reinforcing damaged ships, anti-aircraft and anti-missile operations and replenishment at sea.

I was just checking indian navy fleet. They were mentioning something called stealth frigates. How does our current frigates fare against them.

Milgems/Type 54P's has increase the firepower and Anti sub Capability of PN, because Pakistan sea borders are not that long, we can set up ambushes and concentrate firepower into these chokeholds, IN is indeed larger but they are not impossible to fight, even if they replace few of their Frigates with newer or Stealthier ones. PN has done remarkable when it comes fleet modernization and still going on with new projects.
