LONDON: In an extraordinary development, Scotland Yard officers from the Counter Terrorism Command, investigating the murder of Dr Imran Farooq, executed a search warrant under Schedule 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) at a business address in Edgware.
The News can reveal exclusively that the raid started early morning on Thursday and was continuing at the time of filing of this report. A source at the Scotland Yard told this scribe that no arrest had been made on Thursday but he confirmed that the police have new leads in the investigation and we have received new crucial evidence. The source told The News that counter terrorism officers were executing a normal search warrant, which is not related to terrorism but its definitely linked with the investigation of Dr Imran Farooqs murder.
This search warrant is being carried out under Schedule 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) at a business address in Edgware. Its a search warrant looking at to gather criminal evidence, but nothing to do with terrorism but officers carrying out the search warrant are form the counter terrorism command unit, said a police spokesman.
We are fully committed to finding the killers of Dr Imran Farooq and our dedicated team is working on it, said the source.
A few months ago, the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command Unit issued a fresh appeal stating that there may be political motives behind Farooqs murder. Police have investigated document consisting of 5,000 pages while 3,200 peopled were quizzed. The police also gathered CCTV footages of thousands of hours.
The Met police have appealed for people to come forward with information. A reward of up to £20,000 has been offered for anyone providing information leading to the identification, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible for Dr Farooqs murder.
Dr Farooq was a leading politician in Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He was killed outside his home in Edgware as he was returning from work on 16th September 2010. He disappeared from Pakistan in 1992 and is known to have been living in exile in London since 1999, when he claimed asylum in the UK.Farooqs party MQM has said that it will offer the police any help to find the killers.
