Scotland Is Still Divided on Independence: 49% VS 51%

The supreme court in the UK announced today that it has ruled there to be no legal basis for a Scottish independence referendum taking place without the consent of Westminster. The ruling now puts the issue "back in the political court", as summarized by one Scottish MP, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirming in a press conference that the SNP is now likely to campaign in the next election solely on the question of independence - creating a de-facto referendum, with a convincing win then used as evidence for the legitimate need for a second vote on the issue.

Taking a different approach, Alex Salmond, former SNP first minister and now leader of the Alba party, has said in response to the supreme court ruling that nationalists should now embark on “a civic campaign of protest and action”. In London, Scottish secretary Alister Jack reacted to the news, urging politicians in the country to now refocus: "People in Scotland want both their governments to be concentrating all attention and resources on the issues that matter most to them", he said, citing a stable economy, energy bills and the NHS as matters he feels are more important.

As the latest polling figures show, however, while a slim majority of people in Scotland are against independence, the country is still starkly divided on the matter. In the first referendum in 2014, 45 percent of voters opted to support the push for independence, but looking at the average of the four most recent polls that share could increase to 49 percent if a new vote was held now - suggesting it is still something which matters a lot to a large proportion of Scottish society. A second vote for now though, will have to wait.

Its a foolish discussion.
To my knowledge UK is the only country in the world giving people the right to choose their future, but there is an important principle attached, one referendum in a generation. They've already had two in recent times, and the idea was rejected both times.

You can't keep voting until you get the desired result, it's stupid. In other countries these things start civil wars, here people's rights are being respected.

Good observation, what's interesting to note it that SNP are championing voting rights for under 18's. However, they refuse to give same rights to Scots living in other home nations numbering a good 2-3 million. Its a fact that there aren't very many Scottish nationalists south of Hadrians wall, most are in London as MP's.

.
When I was in Uk, i could observe clearly the attitude "they and us" of Englishmen toward Scottish people. Most people and media refer to their country as England and themselves as Englishmen, not UK, Britain and British, which was surprised to me. And Scottish English was very hard to understand, totally different from the King's English spoken in London region.

. .
China should diplomatically support the Scottish and Northern Ireland Pro-independence political parties. They have been joined into the Great Britain forcibly.

Everybody likes to shyt on the British these days, it's become a joke. I'm Pakistani origin Brit, but this crap of needless criticism has to stop.

You raised an extremely important point, I hadn't thought about it either, neither is it mentioned much in the media. It's fine to demand rights, OK, but then have an open and an honest approach.

.

Not really. Plebiscites and referenda have been used before.

What's your point?
It doesn't change the point I made.
Ok then, It's UK, and Canada, two countries, in most countries around the world these things do start civil wars, and they have, I did say to my knowledge, thank you for adding to it, but it doesn't change the premise of my statement.

Look at Spain and France, they don't give the same freedoms, and they are in the heart of Europe. But, we have a different approach. Ireland was an issue, but we learnt and moved on.

Lol.. nice BS.

UK give only referendum when they are confident of winning the poll. When they know chances of losing is high. They will stop it. Same like Russia rig referendum for Ukraine land.

Yeah nice argument,
make your argument or go bother someone else, I don't have time for fools.
Lol...after caught BS and try to divert with irrelevant response. We all know the tricks of white. And u are easily fool by their surface workmanship. The British claim they have so much human right and champion of them.

But when it's Palestine , Arabs or Indian Kashmir. Suddenly, UK will claim they will not interfere in internal of other countries and no human right need to involve.. only fool like u easily believe the BS spread by the white man.

So now you are going to bring race into it?
Are you going to be a racist now?

And please grow up, each issue demands it's own consideration. This is domestic referendum. You can say it's hypocrisy to give the right to vote to your own people, but not support the same right for others, and you would be right. But that doesn't change the fact, that domestically that right has been given, whereas in other countries they don't even give that right to their own citizen's, Britain does.

Now, saying that it is hypocritical, when it comes to not supporting the same right for others, you would be right, but that's a different discussion. If we start linking everything, then no discussion would ever stop, because you can literally link anything to everything.

Racism? Yup, when white think the whole world revolve around them and browns like u shall serve them. It's not difficult to see who is racist. Only you think white has ended racism.

Yes more so here on this forum there a few including the OP, tends to create threads which are best relegated to third rate forums, a big reason why I am a passive participant in this forum.
