Scomi keen to construct Dhaka-Chittagong monorail
Foreign company keen on monorail
Friday, July 8, 2011
Scomi International, a Malaysia-India joint venture expressed its interest in building a monorail between Dhaka and Chittagong, which will offer people faster means of transport and eventually ease traffic congestion on the country's main highway, connecting the capital with the prime port city.
Representatives of the joint venture, Scomi International, expressed the interest during a meeting with Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith held at the finance ministry on July 7. General Manager of the company Sayed Hussain led his colleagues to the meeting.
Following the meeting, the finance minister told reporters that the firm was advised to submit a formal proposal to the government for consideration. At the meeting, Muhith said, the representatives of the company gave an idea that the monorail could be built on the existing Dhaka-Chittagong Highway without acquiring crop land and removing nearby houses and other structures for the purpose.
He said the company is now constructing a 26-kilometre long monorail in the Indian city of mumbai at a cost of Rupees 120 crore for every kilometre. The finance minister said the proposed monorail on Dhaka-Chittagong route could be built under the public-private partnership (PPP) project.
The monorail, once in operation, can carry 80,000 commuters on either way every hour. The maximum speed limit of the rail will be 90 kilometre an hour when the minimum 32 kilometre. -BSS
