Scientists write to PM, CMs of TN, Kerala on Kudankulam nuclear plant project safety

CHENNAI: Scientists from several institutions have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well as the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, expressing concern over the use of substandard components in the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tiruneveli in southern Tamil Nadu.

The project, which is soon to be commissioned, got the Supreme Court's nod on May 6.

The scientists pointed to media reports that said four valves in a critical safety system in the plant were found to be defective. A copy of the letter was also sent to the secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).

"As the chief minister of the states, hosting and neighbouring the nuclear power plant, the two of you have a responsibility to satisfy yourself and the residents of Tamil Nadu and Kerala that the plant has been constructed to the highest safety standards," read the letter, singed by 60 scientists. "Any exercise to assure oneself of the quality of components used will have to be done before the plant is commissioned. Once commissioned, the radioactive environment in sections of the plant will make it impossible to access and test some potentially critical components," it added.

The letter was signed by scientists from Indian Institutes of Sciences, Bangalore (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras and Bombay, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Indian Institute for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) and Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and several other research institutes.

On May 6, the Supreme Court gave a go-ahead to the project saying there is no basis to say that the plant will have an adverse impact on the environment and people living near the site. A bench comprising Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice Dipak Misra said, "Apprehension, however, legitimate it may be, cannot override the justification of the project. Nobody on this earth can predict what would happen in future and to a larger extent we have to leave it to destiny. But once the justification test is satisfied, the apprehension test is bound to fail."

mhhh so many IIT scientists expressing their concerns?

There should be an independent investigation into this...

. .
Further proof that maybe the fishermen were right. The whole time, the gov't and the courts have been telling us otherwise. Now what will they say? Scientists don't know what they are talking about? Plz.......one common theme in India is our gov;t is corrupt to the core and cares only about their pockets not the ppl!

. .
their is no authenticity for any scientist's claim or any villagers claim. Unless he himself worked on the plant and really know what he is talking about(good nuclear/physicist scientist).

. .
IIT mera lund. The first year students know more than teaching staff. Saalo Haliday or baki textbook raatake third year me gaand marte hain. These people want to go to Kundalkulam. Trust the South Indians they have more brains than you Prof. VIRUS.

PS: I didn't go to IIT, my friend did and that's his personal experience.

If those scientists are working on kudankulam nuclear plant then this is a serious issue. If they are not working there, how did they know substandard equipments are used?? SC already given go ahead on the project.

So corruption has seeped into every form of the Indian govt including our own Supreme Court. Do you think the court is free of corrupting influences? I highly doubt it.

Right. I was waiting for your type to jump in. Yet, I should believe the govt and what you believe. What exactly is your qualifications? When our own leading scientists are writing about this, why the f-u-k would I believe an incompetent corrupt gov't? Im sure you know more than them? Plz......

So I trust their opinion more than I trust any stupid poster on this forum. I also trust their opinion over our corrupt gov't leaders and Supreme **** judges...

If you say our leaders are corrupt, that is true but if you say our supreme court is corrupt then i disagree with you.

why is nobody giving thought to the fact that it was Indian scientists who discovered the fault in these valves which essentially means that India is not blindly accepting whatever is being provided by the Russians. Please bear in mind India does have its own nuclear program and operate 20 odd reactors. So we are not novices that will accept any material from Russia without questioning and verification. And to top it all India was open to admit such a fault prior to plant being made operational. This clearly states that things although moving slowly, are actually going in the right direction.

No govt will play in the lives of thousands of people, even the most corrupt ones. The 4 valves were just malfaunctioning, they arent sub standard. The media and anti nuclear group gave that name.
Do u think the scientist found those? The malfunctioninig valves was found by the DAE n govt scientist themselves during checks and replaced, and after that Supreme court cleared them. Moreover the valves , arent much important at all in operation of a plant. Its just they don want to take any chances, and replaced it.
This is just an another pathetic attempt by Anti Nuclear brigade to pump up sympathy and lies.
All is well, and India needs electricity.

Do any of these scientist from IIT and IISC are working in Nuclear Physics or any other Nuclear Field?
And any one of them inspected the plant?
Any of them know what Valve it was? Does any of them know, that the valves were found defective during tests and replaced?
And what do u think an archibishop talking against Nuke power plant knows more than Indian Nuclear Scientist or the Supreme court for that matter?

How do you pick which scientists to believe and who not to.
Scientists from DAE/AEC are saying all is well. Why do you think they are lying? You are just cherry picking.

The people from DAE and related organisations are much more qualified to make a comment on the plant than any number of scientists from IITs and all.
