In the first step towards
ending India’s dependence on
the US-controlled Global
Positioning System (GPS), the
first of seven satellites that
will form the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System,
or IRNSS, is expected to be
launched by December 2012,
Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) scientists
have said. The IRNSS will be composed
of seven geostationary
satellites to watch over the
country from 36,000 km
above the earth’s surface—
two satellites each would be positioned in the north and
south, with three in the
middle, according to Pradeep V
Khekale, a senior scientist
with ISRO’s Space
Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad. Khekale is the
programme manager for
GAGAN, or GPS-aided Geo
Augmented Navigation, a
system that improves GPS
accuracy for users in India, and is involved in developing
the applications for IRNSS. Currently, only the United
States and Russia have
functional independent
satellite-based navigation
systems, although China has
recently launched two satellites for its own system.
“The first satellite launch is
expected within a year, and
all seven satellites for IRNSS
are expected to be launched
within three years,” said Chirag Dewan, a senior
scientist at SAC. The payloads for the IRNSS
would weigh approximately
2,000 kilograms, and would
need Geosynchronous Satellite
Launch Vehicles, or GSLVs, to
launch them. Khekale added that the two-frequency INRSS
would be more accurate than
the single frequency GPS. “IRNSS is generating a lot of
interest, excitement and focus
at the SAC now, especially
after the successful launch of
the RISAT-1 just a few weeks
ago,” said Shailendra Singh, a Radio Frequency engineer at
SAC who was part of the
RISAT mission, the payload
for which was developed
here.

we were supposed to have this in place by 2012 :hitwall:

The problem is with GSLV, it has not matured as yet. GSLV is required to put a satellite in Geosynchronous orbit. ISRO's more matured rocket PSLV can't do this for you.

If you don't have the rocket, you can't put the satellite.

17 launched satellites suddenly become 2, because loser indians need to fuel nationalism and hide the huge gap it has with China.

Beidou navigation system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Asia Pacific has already been covered by this 17 satellites yet india/indians couldn't even be brave enough to face it.

you have to question why the regime in new delhi fear its cizitens to see the gap with China

Once an Indian ... you cannot be an Indian one day, you could have corrected the mistake of the data more graciously and who am I to say, or even to expect Grace and Chinese in one sentence.

So much for the taunting which the Americans had in place since 2 decades, if you were pioneers of something, taunt away.. if you catching up to Americans... you are right catch up and then talk.

America's leadership in the area is unquestioned.

the real problem here is indians couldn't face the reality and huge gap it has with China.

Mr. (Un)Peaceful ... who brought china and "loser indians" in first place ?
Why are u so eager to Bring China from Nowhere .... n Troll ??

Says Who ? You ? ....lol... This is Called Mental Masturbation. Keep it Up.

I think you chinese don't know proper english, then don't show it to the world ...... and become the laughing stock in front of the world.

China has recently launched two satellites for its own system.

In english it want to say that " that china launched recently 2 sats for the system recently, ( which mean, talking about launching of sats on 04/29/2012 and not talking about other previous launches. got it ?)

Its better before you open your mouth an show the world how IQ and english you got , better first lean and interpreate what is written and what is saying...........

Man you Chinese are bolted for high IQ and don't know proper english...

another shameless and lying indian. there are 4 satellite navigation systems that are known to the world:

Bdidou - (COMPASS) China has already in operation officially since 27 Dec, 2011:

A press conference on the Beidou/Compass navigation system was held at the State Council Information Office in Beijing December 27 to announce the official start of operational positioning, navigation, and timing services to China and surrounding areas and the public release of a "beta" or test version of the Beidou/Compass Interface Control Document.

Beidou/Compass Declared Operational, Test ICD Released | GPS World

Beidou will start covering service in Asia Pacific by the end of this year and the world in 2020!

GPS - USA - status: operational

GLONASS - Russia - status: operational

Galileo- European Union - status: in development

india - status:?

another shameless and lying indian. there are 4 satellite navigation systems that are known to the world:

Now You are lying here. Check WIKI. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS ) There are 6 NAV systems..Including an INDIAN one which you deliberately Ommited,

* GLONASS – Russia's global navigation system. Fully operational worldwide.
* Galileo – a global system being developed by the European Union and other partner countries, planned to be operational by 2014
* Beidou – People's Republic of China's regional system, currently limited to Asia and the West Pacific[121]
* COMPASS – People's Republic of China's global system, planned to be operational by 2020[122][123]
* IRNSS – India's regional navigation system, planned to be operational by 2012, covering India and Northern Indian Ocean[124]
* QZSS – Japanese regional system covering Asia and Oceania

Just Open Your Dictionary and check the meaning of the word : "Functional" .
Your System is NOT Global... as in case of GLONASS and GPS. Which have a Functional Global Coverage .
SO what IndianTiger Meant was. None Systems other than GPS and Glonass have Global Coverage.

Got It ?

.
build own Positioning system is necessary for every big powers.
the cost is huge to build a Global Positioning System which need around 30 satellites.
but many countries can afford a own Regional Navigation Satellite System.

.
We need coverage at leats 5k km from our borders. what is the range of Indian GPS? i mean how far it can look out side India?

.
China's system had been functioning for years. Beidou helped a lot after the rescue of Sichuan earthquack in 2008.

Now you can buy a Beidou terminal like this at Alibaba for about $30.

The Beidou navigation system has been widely used in fishing industry. Here is a picture of the track of a fishing boat on a Beidou terminal. The white line is the sea boarder between China and NKorea.

.
You can send text message globally using a Beidou terminal device.

Or it can be made really small to put in on your finger.

its so funny that indians here are complaining about the quality of Chinese products given their entire civilization is build upon Chinese products:

indians are using Chinese designed/made power generators to power its nation
indians are posting here because Chinese designed and built their backbone internet routers.
indians can now talk to their friends on mobile because 50% of mobile phones in india are designed/made by Chinese - including those base stations.

one day indian, always liar
