School for pregnant teens set to open in Malaysia

MALAYSIAN state authorities will soon open a school exclusively for pregnant teenagers to help them overcome the stigma of having children without being married, an official said today.

The school will be able to accept about 30 students starting on September 16, making the southern state of Malacca the first in this Muslim-majority country to have such an institution, said school chairman Abdul Rahman Abdul Karim.

The plan comes after Malaysian officials have voiced increasing concerns about teenagers who become pregnant and drop out of school. Some young mothers have abandoned their babies in garbage dumps, bushes or public toilets.

The Islamic affairs department in Malacca will run the school and offer classes in math, science, English and other subjects alongside religious counselling for the girls, Abdul Rahman said. They can also stay in a hostel next to the school.

"We want to give them a second chance to rebuild their future," Abdul Rahman said. "After they deliver their babies, the girls can go back to their ordinary schools."

$ex out of wedlock remains a taboo for many Muslims in Malaysia, where more than 50 babies have been found abandoned so far this year. Many of them died.

Officials in Malacca have recorded at least 170 babies born out of wedlock this year. More than 70 were delivered by teenage girls.

Malacca's chief minister recently encouraged Muslim teenagers to get married if they cannot resist having $ex and promised to allocate state funds to help them start a family.

A bad move which will encourage more unmarried teens to get pregnant.

i dont think it will encourage the others. if the girls know how it is to be pregnant in younger age and like that, they will never wish 2 have such a future. on the other hand, it is good to save the lives of other girls by establishing these centres.

partial segregation is quite a sensible approach under the circumstances imho.....however there should be some way in which these kids should be able to
reintegrate with main stream society at some point in the future.....

. . . . .
Do drug rehabilitation centre encourage people to have drugs?

IMHO Phillipines also needs these schools.

Drug rehabilitation takes away drug addiction.. this school wont take away pregnancy.. rather appear as a solace for people who has indulged in such acts.

The people who indulge in such acts need to be shown the right way and this school is going to do that.

Jail for fcuking teens set to open in Malaysia

yes, throw them in jail and that will solve the problem. and what about the babies?

yes, and is there anything wrong with that? Its not like that encourages teens to have ***. it gives them a second chance in life. besides, you have to remember that sometimes these girls are not some irresponsible teens. they might even be **** victims.

these kind of camps HELP the young mothers to cope with the stress of the situation, and prepares them for life after delivery.

Malaysia is not a European nation.. It is a very strong Islamic based society in which these sorts of acts are condemned.. Opening a school of this sort wont let teens go to them during pregnancy and come back out with babies and resume normal schooling..

The garbage throwing and abortions are due to the fear from family.

I dont think opening a school will decrease this fear in reality.

Benny, you're making them look more extreme than they are. This school opened because people are reasonably mature to understand what psychologicla traumatic experience such young girls undergo and what terrible effect that would have on their babies.

The fear has to go. There should be increased awareness on media and open discussions. Religious loonies who demand stoning of such girls should be jailed for life time because for a few minutes of fame, they ruin these girls' lives while the guy goes scott free.

Only and open discussion and awareness campaigns will save these girls.
