ISLAMABAD: The Supreme of Court of Pakistan declared the new contempt law, recently passed by the parliament, as “unconstitutional”, while hearing petitions against the law on Friday.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that the immunity provided by the new law is against the Constitution.

The chief justice added that the Section 6 and Section 8 of the new law is also unconstitutional and is against the freedom of judiciary.

The Section 11, which says that a hearing will be suspended when an appeal is filed, is also against the freedom of the judiciary, the chief justice remarked, and added that the new law is contradictory to the Article 4 and 9 of the Constitution.

good... that was indeed what was needed to be done about a mal intended legislation carried out by PPP and status quo minded people.

.
What has SC done to stop the madness of PPP? who are on a rampage mode to destroy every sector in Pakistan. SC should had taken even more hard decision against PPP to prevent them from making such outrageous rules again.

. .
PPP should have amended the article and then should have bought the new contempt law.

.
who will be the third pm of ppp ...

Jamshed Dasti :D

anyhow the govt has decided to retaliate, they say the right to legislate any law lies with the parliament the supreme authority...

I think either they will issue another ordinance or take the game to next level !!

.
I would like Supreme Court to pursue case against Arsalan Iftikhar with the same vigour. If it does not, many believers of the freedom and independence of this judiciary will be extremely disappointed.
